We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineering Team Leader to join our esteemed client in the public services sector. This role is pivotal in overseeing mechanical operations and ensuring the effective delivery of maintenance services.

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will act as a Mechanical Supervisor and subject matter expert, leading a team in the daily management of mechanical services within a healthcare environment. The role encompasses a comprehensive understanding of:

  • Heating system functionalities and their components.
  • Hot and Cold Water Systems (HWS and CWS) and their components.
  • Ventilation systems and associated elements.
  • Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Water management protocols.
Key Responsibilities

Client Engagement:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of client services and their contractual obligations, including Service Level Agreements (SLA) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Ensure performance metrics are met to mitigate the risk of penalties.
  • Participate in minor works and new installations, managing specifications, pricing, materials, and contractor quotations in compliance with financial guidelines.
  • Facilitate effective communication with staff, clients, patients, visitors, contractors, and management at all levels.

Operational Excellence:

  • Assist the Mechanical Engineering Manager in fulfilling their responsibilities.
  • Ensure service continuity during out-of-hours operations.
  • Oversee the coordination and management of staff and subcontractors in delivering maintenance services, including reactive repairs and planned preventative maintenance.
  • Direct and prioritize activities to ensure efficient maintenance operations that meet defined standards.
  • Utilize Computerized Facilities Management Systems to monitor service tasks and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate documentation is maintained by the workforce.
  • Adhere to all relevant company policies, workplace regulations, and health and safety legislation.
  • Interpret and implement statutory and regulatory requirements related to estates services.
  • Support the Mechanical Engineering Manager in developing and reviewing policies and procedures.
  • Lead fault-finding and resolution efforts for complex mechanical issues.
  • Organize maintenance shutdowns in collaboration with relevant personnel.
  • Participate in internal and external audits as required.
  • Act as the Authorised Person across various disciplines as designated by management.
  • Provide coverage for the Mechanical Engineering Manager when necessary.
  • Maintain a proactive, flexible, and professional approach to all tasks.
  • Participate in the on-call system for urgent matters outside regular hours.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Completion of a recognized mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent training program.
  • Relevant certifications such as City & Guilds or BTEC.
  • Management qualifications or completion of management training courses.
  • Strong understanding of building services.
  • Proficient people management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems.
  • Experience in implementing safe work systems for employees and contractors.
  • Familiarity with compliance requirements in a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
  • Knowledge of Computerized Facilities Management (CAFM) and Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Understanding of Authorised Person responsibilities.
  • Possession of a Competent Person or Responsible Person qualification.
  • Strong IT skills for data management and analysis.
Essential Experience
  • Demonstrated mechanical experience in a similar environment.
  • Experience managing a skilled technical team.
  • Proven ability in performance management, recruitment, and staff development.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft software and CAFM systems.
  • Experience in developing processes and procedures aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • Management of statutory service-related requirements.
  • Client-facing experience with a focus on service delivery.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and building aptitude with the ability to maintain focus under pressure.
Working Conditions

This is a permanent position based on-site. The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:30, totaling 37.5 hours per week, with occasional weekend work as needed.
