Position Overview:

The role involves providing comprehensive mechanical engineering support, ensuring the maintenance and operation of all research and development facilities. A thorough understanding of contemporary building service systems and compliance with health and safety regulations is essential.

The Mechanical Engineer will collaborate closely with the Supervisor and Contract Manager, serving as the primary mechanical engineer for the facilities and contributing to the overall engineering excellence across various services. The position also requires assisting the broader team and clients with tasks that may extend beyond mechanical expertise when necessary.

This position entails a 40-hour work week, with operational hours from 07:00 to 18:00, including early and late shifts. Flexibility for out-of-hours work is required to fulfill statutory maintenance obligations and provide necessary support for service providers. Participation in an on-call rota for emergency situations is also expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively operate all building systems.
  • Issue relevant site permits as part of a safe working system.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks, updating the electronic workflow system accordingly.
  • Conduct daily checks, report defects, and coordinate repairs through the facilities management helpdesk.
  • Identify and order necessary materials for timely installation.
  • Adhere to statutory and company health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Implement and record statutory inspections accurately in designated logbooks.
  • Review and sign off on specialist service provider worksheets, ensuring quality control and escalating issues to the Supervisor.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in all plant areas and workshops.

The Engineer will be expected to troubleshoot and manage all building systems, including but not limited to:

  • Building Management Systems and Electrical Monitoring.
  • HVAC Systems, including humidification.
  • Air Handling Units, Air Conditioning, and Chillers.
  • Knowledge of Variable Air Volume (VAV) and Fan Coil Units (FCU).
  • Domestic Water Services and Plumbing.
  • Pumps, Motors, and Variable Speed Drives.
  • Gas Boilers and Hot Water Calorifiers.

Required Skills:

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship or equivalent experience in building services.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with staff and clients at all levels.
  • Recognized qualification in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with Building Management Systems.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Windows Office applications.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong numeracy and literacy skills, including report writing experience.
  • Ability to adapt and collaborate outside of core trade skills.

Qualifications:

  • City & Guilds or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing and Heating Systems.
  • Certification in Pressure Systems Competencies.
  • Legionella Awareness certification.
  • FGAS or Gas Safe training.
  • Familiarity with current health and safety legislation.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Valid driving license.
