We are seeking a skilled Avian Ecologist to join our dedicated team of environmental consultants across various locations. If you are an experienced professional in ornithology looking to advance your career within a reputable consultancy, we would be delighted to hear from you.

In this role, you will be integral to collaborating with our diverse team of ecologists, landscape designers, and environmental planners.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Leading and participating in avian surveys utilizing various methodologies and techniques.
  2. Maintaining detailed field records and plans in line with established guidelines and best practices, ensuring effective data management.
  3. Conducting data analysis and preparing technical reports based on desk studies and relevant data.
  4. Experience in conducting Ecological Impact Assessments on sensitive species and habitats, as well as completing Shadow Habitats Regulations Assessments, is desirable.
  5. Assisting with other ecological survey types relevant to your expertise and career aspirations, such as water vole, otter, badger, and bat surveys.
  6. Providing expert advice on ecological and ornithological issues to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  7. Mentoring junior staff interested in ornithology, sharing your knowledge to support their professional growth.
  8. Building and nurturing strong relationships with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

About you:

  1. Professional experience in ornithology within public or private sectors is advantageous.
  2. A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline is preferred.
  3. Exceptional bird identification skills and proven experience in various ornithological survey techniques (e.g., vantage points, breeding and wintering birds, raptors, farmland, and waders).
  4. Experience working safely in remote environments throughout all seasons, including adverse weather conditions.
  5. Willingness to travel for work, including during unsociable hours, particularly in spring and summer.
  6. Strong theoretical knowledge of ecology, survey guidelines, environmental assessments, and mitigation strategies.
  7. Comprehensive understanding of UK wildlife legislation and the conservation status of bird species in the UK.
  8. Proficient in report writing, ensuring high standards and meticulous attention to detail.
  9. Experience in writing or assisting with Habitat Regulation Assessments for SPA impacts is beneficial but not mandatory.
  10. Understanding of scientific data collection methods, data analysis, and the ability to accurately record and store data.
  11. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues both in the office and in the field.
  12. Membership or eligibility for membership with a relevant professional body is desirable but not essential (e.g., CIEEM).
  13. Experience with GIS software is advantageous but not a requirement.
  14. A valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle are necessary.
