Eligibility Criteria

To qualify as a Shared Lives carer, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Own or rent a residence with an available spare bedroom
  • Have a genuine desire to connect with individuals and provide care and support
  • Complete a comprehensive training program

Who You Will Support

As a Shared Lives carer, your role will involve assisting:

  • Individuals with physical or sensory disabilities
  • Adults facing learning challenges
  • Senior citizens, including those with dementia
  • Individuals dealing with mental health concerns

Additionally, you may be required to offer assistance during health crises or emergencies, such as post-hospital discharge situations.

Application Process

  • Express Your Interest: If you are interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer, you must first express your interest.
  • Undergo the Suitability Assessment: Following your expression of interest, you will enter a suitability assessment phase, which may take three to six months. This process includes various checks, such as:
    • DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service)
    • Medical references
    • Professional and personal references
    • Health and safety evaluation of your residence
  • Matching Process: Upon successful completion of the suitability assessment, you will be matched with an individual in need of support based on your capabilities. A preliminary meeting will be arranged to ensure mutual agreement. Training will be provided post-approval to enhance your skills, with refresher courses required every three years.

Compensation for Shared Lives Carers

Day support carers receive payment based on an hourly rate, while short break carers are compensated with a fee corresponding to the type of support rendered. Both categories of carers are classified as self-employed and must register with HMRC.
