We are seeking to appoint a Lead Surgical Practitioner within The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Candidates must be a registered nurse or an operating department practitioner actively engaged in practice.
We are looking for a versatile practitioner who can adapt to various specialties and take on responsibilities in the absence of a theatre coordinator.
The successful candidate will serve as a key resource for all clinical personnel and students, holding a relevant Practice Assessor (Nurse) or Practice Educator (ODP) qualification. They will be involved in the supervision, training, and support of all learners in the theatre environment, contributing to their professional development and the staff appraisal process.
It is essential to foster a positive learning atmosphere and seize every opportunity for personal and professional growth.
Delivering high-quality service with a focus on patient safety and care excellence is paramount. Candidates should demonstrate effective teamwork and adhere to the highest standards of evidence-based practice.
The Lead Surgical Practitioner will be an integral member of the theatre team, providing leadership and guidance to colleagues while upholding high standards of clinical practice and patient care.
Main Responsibilities
- Function as a proficient clinical practitioner within the assigned clinical area.
- Provide direct patient care while coordinating and overseeing nursing and theatre operations.
- Ensure the delivery of clinical activities during their designated shifts.
- Guarantee the efficient and effective use of resources to provide optimal quality care to the patient population.

Our on-call team is available to cover theatre services around the clock. - Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).
- Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to the specialty.
Experience and Knowledge

- Substantial post-registration experience in Theatres/Anaesthetics.
- Demonstrated managerial capabilities.
- High-level clinical skills and knowledge.
- Experience in coordinating, managing, and leading teams in out-of-hours service delivery.
- Teaching and mentoring experience.
- Awareness of nursing and departmental policies and practices relevant to the specialty.
Desirable
- Willingness to undertake a mentorship course.
- Involvement in nursing audits and research initiatives.
