Position Overview
This role is situated within the Healthcare Associated Infection, Fungal, Antimicrobial Resistance, Antimicrobial Utilisation & Sepsis Division of the UK Health Security Agency. The primary objective of this division is to safeguard individuals from infections related to healthcare and those resistant to antimicrobials, through exemplary public health microbiology, outbreak management, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, research, and intervention strategies.
This position within the Incidents, Outbreaks and Stewardship (IOS) Team of the HCAI & AMR Division focuses on providing epidemiological and data management expertise aimed at enhancing surveillance systems and investigating outbreaks.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be tasked with leading initiatives to bolster surveillance systems and research pertaining to Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance and Prescribing. This includes overseeing data collection, validation, and the generation of routine surveillance intelligence in these critical areas.
The individual will analyze and interpret surveillance data, develop automated processes and solutions, and manage complex or sensitive data requests. This will be achieved through the application of analytical, statistical, database, mapping, and web tools, supported by a strong foundation in information and data science methodologies.
This role will also involve conducting epidemiological investigations of infectious disease incidents and outbreaks, collaborating with various stakeholders across the UK Health Security Agency and beyond. Responsibilities will encompass the design, execution, analysis, and interpretation of analytical studies across diverse settings, while also mentoring team members in these activities.
The post holder will contribute to public health scientific analyses and author reports on specific projects, as well as regular and ad hoc publications, including peer-reviewed articles.

Surveillance and Data Analysis
- Identify surveillance requirements, develop specifications for surveillance systems, conduct intricate analyses, and interpret surveillance data, making informed recommendations. Supervise the preparation, quality, and delivery of routine reports.
- Develop and utilize information systems to support public health initiatives, including outbreak and incident responses, and lead the aggregation and interpretation of data from various sources.
Enhanced Surveillance and Epidemiological Investigations
- When applicable, lead and manage the technical and analytical aspects of enhanced surveillance within the HCAI & AMR Division.
- Analyze and evaluate both quantitative and qualitative data and research evidence to inform decision-making processes.
Statistical and Software Proficiency
- Employ a variety of common statistical tests and algorithms, translating statistical processes into automated solutions where necessary.
- Utilize statistical/database/mapping/web tools such as Stata, R, ArcGIS, Access, SQL, and SharePoint in routine reports, surveillance activities, and complex analytical tasks.
Quality Assurance and Governance
- Provide guidance on quality and governance matters, including information security for all surveillance activities, assessing existing systems, and enhancing standards and consistency.
- Contribute to the HCAI & AMR Division's quality program through audits and ensure the integrity of data collected, stored, and transferred.
Project Management
- Coordinate and lead projects such as the implementation of new systems and processes.
