About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Support Assistant to work closely with a young boy in our SEN primary school who faces SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) difficulties.

The ideal candidate will be a strong role model, with the ability to offer both emotional and behavioural support, while fostering a positive and nurturing learning environment.

In this role, you will be supporting the child on a one-to-one basis, helping him develop his emotional regulation, social skills, and focus in line with his individual education and behaviour support plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 support to a child with attachment difficulties and SEMH needs, promoting positive behaviour and emotional well-being.
  • Help the student remain focused in lessons and engage in learning activities.
  • Assist with the development of coping strategies for managing emotions and behaviours.
  • Work closely with the school's SENCO, teachers, and external professionals to implement personalised support plans.
  • Encourage social interaction and build a trusting relationship with the pupil to foster a sense of security.
  • Model positive behaviours and act as a role model to support emotional development.
  • Provide consistent boundaries and structured routines, ensuring a safe and stable environment for the child.
  • Assist with any personal care needs if necessary.
Requirements
  • Previous experience working with children with SEMH difficulties, attachment disorders, or other behavioural challenges in an educational or care setting.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach, with the ability to manage challenging behaviour in a supportive manner.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with children, staff, and families.
  • An understanding of trauma-informed approaches and strategies for supporting children with attachment issues.
  • Experience in SEN environments is desirable, but not essential.
  • Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology or support work are beneficial.
