Overview

As the Public Relations Manager, you will be responsible for crafting and executing a media engagement strategy that promotes the organization's policies and initiatives while safeguarding its interests across various regions and business sectors. This role is crucial in aligning with the overarching national media and communication strategies.

About the Position

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the busiest press teams, where your contributions will be vital to our success. We are seeking a Public Relations Manager to highlight the organization's efforts in enhancing rail services for both passengers and freight, amplify safety initiatives, and create engaging content that aids in passenger journeys.

The position covers significant rail routes, including:

  • The East Coast main line extending from Kings Cross to the Scottish border,
  • The Midland Main Line from St. Pancras to Sheffield, passing through Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby,
  • Key railway lines throughout the North East, including all TransPennine routes.

We are looking for an exceptional communicator with a robust background in media relations and social media, who enjoys collaboration and storytelling.

The ideal candidate will be brimming with innovative ideas on how to showcase our personnel and their groundbreaking work, possessing the insight to determine the most effective timing and methods for sharing these narratives.

In times of disruption, you will adeptly manage our reputation, address misinformation, and handle challenging stories with finesse.

You will establish strong relationships within broadcast and online newsrooms and possess the filming and editing skills necessary to create compelling content for press releases and social media.

We require someone with excellent journalist connections, a keen sense for newsworthy stories, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure to disseminate clear and accessible information to journalists and the public during challenging times.

We encourage you to explore and uncover stories by engaging directly with our projects. This role involves regular travel and site visits, along with a mix of home and office work.

Your responsibilities may include:

  1. Participating in a comprehensive, year-round press desk service, including on-call duties for out-of-hours media needs.
  2. Executing national media campaigns aligned with organizational priorities.
  3. Effectively managing processes, quality standards, and operational systems for regional media coordination and information sharing.
  4. Implementing strategies that support the objectives outlined in the national media and communications plans.
  5. Overseeing the production of press releases, briefing sessions, and media visits, while organizing broadcasts as needed.
  6. Monitoring media commentary and preparing appropriate responses to clarify or correct misconceptions.
  7. Tracking social media channels and providing timely and accurate responses as necessary.
  8. Keeping senior media relations personnel informed of significant media inquiries or activities.
  9. Evaluating the effectiveness of press coverage and taking corrective actions when needed.
  10. Maintaining regular communication with editors and senior journalists to ensure they are informed about our role and key stories.
  11. Executing the major incident communications plan as required.
