About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Neonatal Consultant to join our team at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. As a key member of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient-centered care, respecting the privacy, dignity, and choice of individual patients.
  • Contribute to the provision of inpatient neonatal services within the Trust, working collaboratively with Consultant Neonatal colleagues.
  • Deliver high-quality neonatal care, utilizing the expertise of the existing Neonatal Team.
  • Assist Consultant colleagues in the continued development of a consultant-led approach to Neonatal Paediatrics.
  • Share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the team.
  • Be the hot week Consultant 1 in 8, including 1 in 8 weekends.
  • Run Consultant clinics at both Blackburn and Burnley sites.
About Us

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of 550,000 in the Pennine Lancashire area. Our services are provided from our two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital, as well as our community rehabilitation wards at Pendle Community Hospital, Accrington Victoria Hospital, and Clitheroe Community Hospital.

Our Blackburn site is the center for all acute services in East Lancashire, while Burnley General Teaching Hospital is home to the East Lancashire Women's and Newborn Centre, the largest in-patient consultant-led obstetric unit in the North West.

The development of a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care service for East Lancashire was approved in June 2006, and the two neonatal services at Blackburn and Burnley came together as an East Lancs Level 3 service from November 2010.

Requirements
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Two years of relevant clinical neonatal experience in a busy Neonatal tertiary Unit and relevant allied specialty.
  • Paediatric CCT/CESR with Neonatal interest or likely to achieve within 6 months of appointment.
  • MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • NLS Provider.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Neonatal CCT.
  • NLS Instructor.
Person Specification
  • Two or more years of training/experience in Neonatology at regional/level 3 units/allied specialties.
  • Experience and training in child protection, including attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses.
Experience
  • Management of a wide range of Neonatal problems, including care of complex medical and surgical babies.
  • Experience in newer modalities of ventilation, such as HFO and inhaled nitric oxide.
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust.
  • Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training.
  • Awareness of basic research methods.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based practice.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience in volume ventilation and Echo skills.
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal, and mentorship.
  • Experience of organizing teaching programs or events.
  • Previous research projects/publications.
Continuing Professional Development
  • Clear commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Experience of evidence-based medicine.
  • Ability to keep up to date in the specialty.
  • IT skills.
Management
  • Understanding of current NHS management systems, including clinical governance and risk management.
  • Attendance at management meetings, Division of Child Health.
Personal Skills
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, their parents, and other relatives, as well as with colleagues and staff in all disciplines.
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff.
  • Ability to lead the development of services and support best practice amongst colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues, both medical and from other disciplines.
  • Flexible approach to working practices.
Circumstances
  • Agree to live within 30 minutes of the Trust.
  • Able to travel to meet the requirements of the post, with access to own transport required.
