Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Assume responsibility for the ongoing care of patients in collaboration with fellow consultants.
  • Participate in the Gastroenterology on-call schedule.
  • Independently manage patients presenting with gastrointestinal issues, delivering both emergency and elective care.
  • Engage in audit and governance activities while supporting the education of junior medical personnel and other healthcare staff involved in patient care.
  • Execute necessary administrative tasks to support clinical responsibilities.
  • Actively participate as a core member of the Upper GI / Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT.
  • Cultivate advanced clinical skills, particularly in the evaluation and management of critically ill patients.
  • Exhibit strong teamwork capabilities and a professional demeanor conducive to effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Achieve clinical and quality objectives as agreed upon with clinical teams and commissioners, both nationally and locally.
  • Oversee patient journeys throughout their clinical pathways.
About the Organization

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the primary provider of acute hospital services for approximately half a million residents in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. This region features some of the most scenic landscapes in England and Wales, stretching from the Cambrian Mountains to the borders of the Black Country. Key towns within our service area include Shrewsbury, Telford, and others, each offering unique characteristics. Our main facilities, the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, are located a short distance apart and collectively deliver a comprehensive range of acute hospital services, including emergency care, outpatient services, diagnostics, inpatient medical care, and critical care.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

A formal job plan will be established between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director, along with consultant colleagues, within three months of commencing the role. A full-time job plan typically consists of a 10 PA working week. This plan will be reviewed annually and will outline the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the upcoming year. It encompasses all facets of a consultant's professional practice, including clinical responsibilities, teaching, research, education, and managerial duties. The plan will delineate a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external, and will incorporate personal objectives linked to broader service enhancements and trust strategic goals.

For a full-time position, the job plan will generally be allocated as follows:

  • 7.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Direct Clinical Care, which includes clinical activities, clinically related tasks, and both predictable and unpredictable emergency work. Clinic templates are designed for 3.5 hours, allowing 0.5 hours for additional clinic-related administrative duties within the allocated 1 PA.
  • 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), which encompass continuing professional development, audit, teaching, and research. Of these, 1.5 will be dedicated to supporting revalidation, while the remainder will focus on Trust priorities, including educational supervision and leadership roles, reviewed annually as part of the job planning process. Sufficient SPA time will be allocated for quality assurance activities. Consultants may conduct a maximum of one SPA session off-site at a time that aligns with their individual schedules and the requirements of the activities. Direct Clinical Care PA time will be adequate to manage the clinical administrative workload generated by inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopic activities.
  • Out of Hours Responsibilities - Participation in an on-call rota primarily for gastrointestinal emergencies will be required, with an approximate frequency of 1 in 10. Weekend on-call duties will necessitate on-site presence on Saturday and Sunday mornings, in addition to being on-call from home to provide guidance on other gastroenterological emergencies.

The allocation of PAs is subject to review and may be adjusted based on further assessments or changes in service demands.
