Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Job Overview

Are you interested in contributing to critical Defence challenges and enhancing the national security of the United Kingdom?

The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO), established in April 2016, is dedicated to delivering nuclear capabilities that deter threats and safeguard our nation.

The DNO supervises all Defence nuclear operations (excluding direct actions) and is tasked with ensuring nuclear deterrence; sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, which encompasses all entities, programs, and personnel that maintain the UK's nuclear deterrent; and providing counsel on UK nuclear policy, strategic planning, and international collaboration on nuclear issues.

For over six decades, the UK's independent nuclear deterrent has been pivotal in countering the most severe threats to our national security and that of our NATO partners. To maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent, we are in the process of constructing four new nuclear-armed submarines, known as the Dreadnought Class, and modernizing our nuclear warheads. These renewal initiatives will employ cutting-edge technology and serve as a testament to the capabilities of British industry.

At DNO, we firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not only ethical imperatives but also vital for a successful and dynamic organization. We recognize that diverse teams offer a broad spectrum of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, which enhance decision-making, creativity, and innovation. Our culture celebrates differences, ensuring that our personnel feel supported, included, and empowered. Join us in an organization that genuinely values diversity and inclusion and strives to make a positive impact globally.

Within DNO, the Warhead Directorate spearheads the UK's nuclear warhead program, ensuring a stockpile of reliable, safe, and effective nuclear warheads to support the UK's strategic nuclear deterrent, both now and in the future.

This position is based in either Bristol or Reading, with regular travel between locations required.

Position Description

The Future Capability team within DNO Transport is responsible for the design and implementation of a new, secure transport capability and associated equipment projects for the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.

The team is currently seeking an Engineer to assist the Engineering Manager in transitioning a capability from initial design to operational deployment.

This role offers an engaging opportunity within a supportive team, where you will participate in a fascinating program that will enhance your engineering skills through hands-on experience and relevant training development opportunities.

We are looking for a disciplined and motivated self-starter to join the team and evolve this new position, with pathways for career advancement within the Engineering profession and the broader Defence Nuclear Organisation.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who possess relevant experience, a desire to develop their engineering skills, and an interest in playing a significant role in shaping and executing the Future Capability team's long-term objectives.

Please note that a full driving license is necessary for travel between sites.

The team supports hybrid working; however, the role will necessitate frequent site visits for meetings and access to IT systems.

This position is listed on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may be eligible for the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA), which is discretionary. Being on the PCL does not guarantee entitlement to the RRA, which is not a contractual allowance and may be modified or withdrawn without notice in accordance with MOD policy.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will have an engineering background and a strong interest in acquiring and developing technical expertise relevant to the nuclear sector.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential, as you will engage regularly with Defence Regulators and broader project stakeholders once you are integrated into the team.

An understanding of safety management principles, requirements development, and interface management in a high-hazard and highly regulated environment would be advantageous.

Experience and a solid understanding of how technical projects are executed within Defence would be beneficial.

Key Responsibilities:

Once established in the role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting requirements and interface management for upcoming projects, collaborating with stakeholders from end users to regulators to identify and document requirements and system interfaces.
  • Assisting in the planning for approval, classification, and acceptance of future systems with the competent authority, regulatory community, and approving authority, including the development of relevant technical submissions and managing the supply and delivery of necessary evidence.
  • Developing technical subject matter expertise to enable you to act as an informed customer and support both the project team and the wider Transport Team.
  • Assisting with system design and integration throughout the program lifecycle.

This exciting new role offers opportunities to engage directly with the design, development, manufacturing, and demonstration of capabilities.

As part of your professional growth, there will be opportunities to participate in emergency planning and operations training to understand the role of the wider Transport team within the Nuclear Enterprise.

Additionally, support and encouragement will be provided for obtaining formal qualifications relevant to the role and broader Defence Acquisition.

It is important to note that due to the nature of the work, you must be a UK national and achieve Developed Vetting security clearance before commencing the role.
