To be a key member of our Animal Care Team, working collaboratively to care for, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. This includes, but is not limited to feeding, cleaning, socialising, and general care for the dogs and cats we house at the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre. This is a physically and mentally demanding role.

You will also be a key point of contact for members of the public in terms of providing advice and guidance about animals, organising adoptions and working with fosterers, as well as providing other general customer service support. You will have an understanding of animal behaviours, to best identify what needs an animal has and what they will need in a future home. You will thirst to maintain and keep up to date with animal welfare care developments.

You’ll need to be resilient and be willing to make difficult decisions, as you may have to manage some challenging situations and upsetting circumstances. You’ll be a strong team worker, collaborating to manage your workloads in a way that best supports both the animals, all customers and your team.

Ultimately, you will be an animal welfare champion. You will be looking to always seek the best for animals both in our care and outside of it.
- To be a key member of the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Care Team, acting to support other members of the team and work effectively for the best outcome for the animals in our care
- To care for animals (dogs, cats and other species) including cleaning, walking, feeding, socialising etc
- To work symbiotically with the other arms of the charity such as operations, income etc
- To hold responsibility for the effective and efficient adoption and fostering procedures of the RSPCA Sheffield
- To work at times in a customer facing role, seeing through interaction with customers from beginning to end
- To be resilient and willing to make difficult decisions as a team regarding the welfare of animals
- To be involved in training and outreach services as required
- To fundraise
- To be involved and support at events and the delivery
- To step into customer facing roles, such as shops as required
- To train and raise staff awareness of the role, function, and importance of volunteers
- To support the objectives of the Branch and to uphold and ensure empathy with the key purpose of the RSPCA by promoting the good name of the Branch through its work
- To maintain timely, effective and efficient animal care records and databases
- To abide by protocols including health and safety, disease control, bite drills etc
- You must abide by GDPR, policies and procedures at all times
- To perform all duties relating to the day-to-day care of the animals we shelter at the RSPCA Sheffield, such as feeding, walking, socialising, etc
- To always act safely and appropriately to minimise risk to yourself, staff, the public, and animals
- To have a good understanding of animal behaviours and how this influences the way you interact with them
- To be friendly and loving to all animals in our care and understanding that many of them may have come from challenging backgrounds
- To ensure safe practice when managing animals with potentially aggressive or fearful tendencies
- To be aware of and adhere to all relevant policies and procedures relating to your work
- To remain compliant and up to date with your training
- To professionally and efficiently interact with members of the public regarding adoption enquiries
- To arrange animal adoptions, to ensure they are appropriate for both the animal and members of the public involved.
- To support fosterers and members of the public who adopt with advice and guidance on best practice for animal care.
- To work with the RSPCA Inspectorate, members of the public and other charities to ensure the best outcomes for animals in need.
- To follow up on animals previously in our shelter to provide a continuing care and a supportive, educational service beyond the time the animals were in the shelter
- To know our customer services and animal welfare ‘inside and out’ to provide effective and detailed guidance to staff and customers, as well as to identify trends to be actioned
