**Job Title**:Care Assistant within a Nursing Home

**Responsible to**:Registered Manager/Nurse in Charge

**Job Specification**:To provide care for the residents under the guidance and supervision of the Home Manager, trained nursing staff, shift leaders and senior care assistants; and to undertake other activities to assist in the running of the Home as required.

**Person Specification**:Essential**:Genuine interest in working within a caring environment. Ability to communicate effectively on all levels. Team player. Willingness to participate in vocational training programmes. Satisfactory DBS check. Understanding of the Health and Safety at work act. Understanding of infection control and prevention.

**Desirable **Previous experience of working in a care setting. Relevant vocational qualification (achieved or working towards). Evidence of having undertaken relevant training (i.e. lifting and handling, health and safety, food hygiene, safe guarding vulnerable adults etc.)
- To Act as a key worker for a number of residents. Ensuring that you greet any service users, for whom you are a key worker, on admission to the home and assist them to settle in.
- To assist the residents in personal care including washing, bathing, dressing and toilet needs.
- Responding promptly to call bells.
- To be aware of signs of abuse, any accidents, unexplained injuries or concerns which may be related to a form of abuse and be responsible for immediately reporting concerns to the nurse in charge.
- To ensure that residents are socially presentable in appearance at all times.
- To ensure that residents have any aids e.g. - dentures, hearing aids, spectacles etc., fitted, cleaning and in working order.
- To assist the residents in rehabilitation activities under the guidance and supervision of the Home Manager and trained nursing staff.
- To assist in the cleaning of the Home as the need arises, particularly dining areas after meals and to support infection control and prevention protocols e.g. cleaning up spills immediately.
- To assist as a kitchen/laundry assistant in times when their absence is either unavoidable or without warning.
- To pay due respect to residents’ possessions and to ensure that bedrooms and communal areas are tidy and presentable.
- To be resourceful in the use of supplies.
- To work at all times, within the guidelines of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Employee Handbook and Company Health and Safety Policy and Procedure.
- To be aware of all fire exit and means of escape from the home.
- To complete all Health and Safety and Fire Checks as requested.
- To ensure readiness to commence work at the time stated on the duty rota and not to abandon any duty without permission from the home manager or nurse-in-charge.
- To adhere to the policy relating to personal appearance and the uniform policy whilst on duty.
- To ensure that articles for laundry are separated according to their cleanliness, red bag if urinated/soiled and put directly into the laundry bags provided on the corridors.
- To read and implement the company policy and procedure for infection control.
- To ensure the appropriate segregation of waste material. This it is disposed of in accordance with current legislation and company policy and procedure for infection control.
- To report to the nurse in charge any changes in individual resident’s condition and any other relevant matter, noting especially changes in skin condition.
- To report to the nurse in charge any verbal or visual concerns or complaints observed or raised by the resident or visitors.
- To recognise your own caring limitations and to seek guidance from the home manager or trained nursing staff as appropriate.
- To refer all enquiries regarding the care or condition of the residents to senior nursing staff irrespective of the source of the enquiry.
- To respect the rights of residents including privacy and dignity.
- To assist in the serving and clearing of meals, snacks and drinks.
- Complete all food and fluid charts and any other daily monitoring records as requested.
- To assist residents to eat and drink, monitoring intake and reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge.
- To undertake any training necessary for the completion of your duties. To be aware of the mandatory training and dates to attend training.
- To attend staff and other meetings are requested.
- To undertake any other duties as and when requested.
- To abide by all company policies and procedures in accordance with the staff handbook and policy and procedure file.
- To participate in social activities with service users and to use all interactions with residents as an opportunity for stimulation/occupation.
- To respect the confidentiality of the residents and the home life at all times, including when you are using social networking systems.
