Providing an accurate and up-to-date picture of the economy and society, official statistics play a vital role in monitoring and supporting the development of economic and social policies by government and others.

**_ How will I spend my time?_**

The core focus will be on improving and setting the strategic direction for Scotland’s Official Statistics Open Data Platform, statistics.gov.scot

In this role you’ll be instrumental in increasing the amount of data on the site as well as improve the platform’s tools, ensuring it’s easy to use, accessible and able to be used successfully by a diverse range of users. Activities will include:

- Project managing the next steps for the statistics.gov.scot product to maximise its value, taking into account ongoing developments in open data policy, to inform recommendations.
- Implementing improvements to make statistics.gov.scot easier to use and add value, including understanding user personas and implementing user needs and accessibility
- Identifying, collecting, and migrating data to the statistics.gov.scot system with support from the Open Data Publishing Manager
- Understand, implement, and clearly articulate data modelling and metadata - including R, tidyformat, using csvs, linked open data and graph databases
- Implementing automation and Reproducible Analytical Pipelines in the context of data maturity, reproducibility, and open data publishing to improve data modelling
- Effectively communicating the importance of metadata and FAIR principles in statistics.gov.scot and elsewhere to maximise the value of data for use and re-use
- Be actively involved in data management and developing flow of data and metadata between internal analytical platforms and statistics.gov.scot for the efficient production of statistics processes
- Gaining an understanding of the statistical geography system in Scotland
- Linking with Office for National Statistics and other public bodies to learn from and share good practice on statistics open data publishing.

Management of statistics.gov.scot and staff will include:

- Leading on contract management of statistics.gov.scot and agile ways of working with our open data contractors to maximise the value of open data publishing in a sustainable and efficient manner
- Line manage the Open Data Publishing Manager and provide oversight for other data publishers. In this way, the publication of high value datasets and reference materials (such as geographic code lists) can be prioritised and published for use and re-use in a strategic, systematic, and sustainable manner on the site, to maximise economic, social, and environmental benefits
- Communicating effectively with non-technical data providers. Upskilling data providers and present at events to understand user needs and products built from open data (e.g. internal analytical seminars and external events)

Essential Criteria & Qualifications:

- You will have experience of developing statistics and publishing open data. For example, this will include experience in some of R, tidyformat, csv or open-source tools as routes to publish open data
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, blended project team and delivering to meet user needs
- Good oral and written communication skills with ability to present views confidently and persuasively to an audience who may not share your technical background.
- Ability to work on your own initiative to manage competing pressures, meet deadlines and deliver high quality outcomes; ideally using agile project management techniques
