Job purpose - To provide high quality clinical care both directly, and through the effective management and professional leadership of the clinical Anaesthetic team, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health Care Professions Council and Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust - To be managerially and professionally accountable for the effective delivery of Anaesthetic practice in all theatres and external services. - Providing visible, accessible and authoritative leadership to staff and acting as an expert role model to ensure the excellence and effectiveness of all clinical/surgical practice while maintaining a clinical presence within the theatres as required - To create and support a safe environment which facilitates innovative approaches to patient care and nursing practice in order to improve the quality of care given. - To inspire, motivate and empower others to ensure highly specialised clinical competence and standards are developed and maintained - To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the Matrons or Deputy Matrons across all sites. - To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within theatres Dimensions - To manage effectively the funded establishment of the team through timely recruitment, appraisal and development of staff - To ensure an effective and robust staff rostering system is maintained to cover the 24/7 service requirement - To effectively manage their own time and that of the qualified staff and students in their theatres and to the wider department as needed.
- To manage the clinical environment, ensuring it is fit for purpose at all times and appropriately safely staffed - To provide skilled assistance in the theatres and associated areas acting as a professional role model at all times - Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed best practice - To maintain confidentiality at all times and to support staff, patients, relatives and carers. - To ensure staff plan and prepare equipment according to patient needs and planned procedures - To comply at all times with the NMC/ HCPC Code of Professional Conduct - To recognise, resolve or take action in situations that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of patients and colleagues - To report all incidents/adverse events in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy - To ensure the ordering/ storage and administration of drugs within the theatres is conducted with strict adherence to the legal requirements and Trust policy - Take responsibility for ensuring staff check, set up and safely use of all medical devices/ equipment used on patients and that there are robust systems in place to take the appropriate action/reporting process in the event of faulty devices and equipment - Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, while providing full support of the patient and their needs and staff as required - To ensure all record keeping is legible, accurate and contemporaneous and in accordance with Trust policy and departmental procedureKnowledge, Skills and Experience Required - Registered Nurse/ODP with the NMC/HCPC holding extensive years post registration experience - Experience of deputising for senior department staff - Evidence of delegation and personal time management skills - Able to demonstrate expert clinical competence in a surgical environment with highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience - Possess a high level of awareness and understanding of contemporary issues in anaesthesia and in the wider health and nursing environment, with evidence of continuing professional development - Evidence of teaching and assessing experience and an appropriate qualification with a commitment to the ongoing development of all team staff and nursing services provided - Experience of motivating staff and team building, with proven analytical skills and staff development through appraisal and performance management - Developed/Enhanced IT skills - Experience as a lead resource for disseminating clinical skills and knowledge - Understanding and experience of implementing research based practice - Recognised management course or equivalent level of competence gained through experience - Effective communication, interpersonal, organisational and planning skills - To maintain highly specialised levels of competence Key Result Areas - Manage the clinical area, ensuring protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to and provide a service to the agreed standard which meets organisational and national targets - Participate in audit and research to develop research based practices - Ensuring that your staff assess and define patient needs and provide direct clinical care which is evidence based - Communicate effectively throughout
