**Head of Counselling (Adult Service)**

The purpose of the Head of Counselling (Adult) is to coordinate the effective delivery, quality and growth of Riverside’s adult counselling service. The postholder will be part of the senior leadership of the organisation, working alongside the Head of Counselling for the Young Person’s (YP) service and Operations Lead, supporting the CEO in all clinical aspects and clinical decision-making within the service, with responsibility for developing the adult service in line with Riverside’s wider strategic objectives. They will be responsible for providing a compassionate, safe, ethical, accessible and professional community-based service. The postholder will be an experienced practitioner registered with BACP, UKCP, HCPC, BPC, NCS or equivalent. The individual must have experience and understanding of the psychoanalytic / psychodynamic model of therapy, although an appreciation and understanding of other modalities is desirable. While the role is flexible and there are no fixed office premises, there is an expectation that the postholder will be able to dedicate up to 8 hours per week to face-to-face meetings within the community and across the organisation, where necessary.

**Service Development, Delivery & Operations**
- Responsible for the delivery of a safe, professional and accessible adult counselling service, including one-to-one counselling, group counselling and drop-in services
- Collaborative working with YP Head of Counselling and other members of the clinical team in the promotion and practice of high clinical standards
- Maintain, manage and provide pastoral care and oversight of a sufficient level of suitably qualified and experienced paid, volunteer and trainee counsellors
- Provision of clinical support, guidance and caseload management for counsellors where needed
- Support and facilitate reflective practice, problem-solving and personal development of all counsellors
- Identify and manage the delivery of relevant CPD training for counsellors
- Complete relevant feedback and placement paperwork as required by training institutions
- Liaise and network with training colleges and universities as required
- Maintain and manage a pool of suitably qualified supervisors, ensuring an adequate level of supervision is provided to all volunteer and paid counsellors (in line with course or accreditation body requirements)
- Responsible for the end-to-end client and counsellor experience
- Appoint, induct and maintain a pool of volunteer IC (Initial Consultation) counsellors to deliver client assessments, monitoring assessment standards as required
- Work with the IC Coordinator who maintains and manages the counselling waiting list
- Manage the client allocation process, meeting with IC (initial consultation / assessment) counsellors weekly to discuss new clients and allocate to suitable and appropriately qualified volunteer or paid counsellors
- Ensure Riverside Counselling is the appropriate service for the level of complexity of client’s presenting issues and refer on where required
- Working closely with the Operations Lead to attract, screen, interview, recruit and clinically onboard suitable trainee counsellors, qualified counsellors and suitably trained supervisors, with support from other team members
- Handle and investigate clinically related complaints that may arise or escalate these where necessary
- Define and implement a development plan for the service, in collaboration with the CEO and Young Persons’s (YP) Head of Counselling, tied to the wider Riverside strategic objectives
- Attend external clinical supervision as appropriate
- Act as placement manager and touch point for trainee’s university and college departments
- With support from the senior leadership team, ensure the service is delivered in line with BACP guidelines and their ethical framework

**Safeguarding**
- Act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead for the organisation, in collaboration with the YP Head of Counselling who will maintain overall responsibility for Safeguarding
- Responsible for ensuring safeguarding policies and guidance are being adhered to across the adult service
- Ensure that all adult safeguarding concerns are dealt with in a consistent and timely manner, providing advice and guidance to counsellors in line with Riverside Counselling’s policies and procedures
- Day-to-day responsibility for managing enquiries from counsellors and supervisors regarding client safeguarding and risk, ensuring that there is always a safeguarding contact on-call during the allotted hours
- Responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of counsellors and clients

**Community liaison**
- To promote the services of Riverside Counselling within the local community and be an ambassador for the organisation and its role within the communities it serves
- Work with external stakeholders and partners to deliver effective community services
- Develop relationships with potentia
