The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

- Delivering security of energy supply
- Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
- Encouraging greater energy efficiency
- Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

- Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longer-term - bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
- Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
- Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
- Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for long-term reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
- Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
- Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

**Job description**:
The UK’s unique and historic capability in nuclear is being applied to innovative projects with the potential to support work across the UK’s national strategic agenda. These projects help to maintain and grow valuable, and previously declining, nuclear skills and encourage investment in capabilities which directly strengthen the UK’s wider nuclear portfolio.

The post holder will also have the opportunity to support policy development on matters such as, bridging the capability gaps in the UK’s nuclear sector, the role of the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), the UK’s nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear’s role in medicine. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in working on a high profile and cross-cutting policy area.

Our team, Nuclear Infrastructure, Capability & International (NICI), is part of the Nuclear Power, Infrastructure and Decommissioning Directorate in the Nuclear Cluster in DESNZ. We hold sponsorship of the National Nuclear Laboratory and are leading policy in Fuel Supply, Strategic Capability, Innovation, Civil-Defence Collaboration, and International Engagement. We are a friendly and welcoming team, who are supportive of learning and development opportunities, with colleagues currently based in London, Salford, and Cardiff.

**Key Responsibilities**

The post holder will initially be responsible for acting as the interface across government and arm's length bodies, to coordinate government interests in nuclear/space related projects and informing future policy direction.

Responsibilities will include:
Providing a sector interface between departments, arm's length bodies and the nuclear and space sectors - Identifying cross-cutting needs, opportunities or risks, ensuring appropriate nuclear input (technical and sector breadth) into relevant projects and ensuring coordinated messaging between Departments e.g., around funding announcements.

Capability Development - Considering nuclear for space in line with the wider capability development benefits it supports (e.g., skills growth) and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

Nuclear representative - Using sector knowledge to influence discussions around nuclear technologies in space and identifying cross-sector opportunities, while being mindful of the interactions with other government policies.
