Established in 1952, HorseWorld Trust is a registered charity based in Whitchurch, near Bristol, committed to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing horses, ponies and donkeys in need. Our Welfare department provides a home to all our new arrivals, including sick, neglected and traumatised horses and ponies. We have a team of trained staff committed to their care and rehabilitation and eventual re-homing. HorseWorld also runs a ground-breaking educational programme called Discovery which supports emotional growth and learning in young people through hands-on experience with our rescued horses, ponies and donkeys.

**Role Profile**

**Part Time Discovery Groom
- Monday, Friday and Sunday**

Providing day-to-day care of the equines at HorseWorld plus assist with preparing horses for Discovery and offer support to the Discovery facilitators during sessions

**£13,092.60 pa (£12 per hour)**

**21 hours per week over Monday, Friday and Sunday between 8am - 4.00pm. To include some Bank Holidays and additional hours to cover ad hoc duties.**

Location: HorseWorld Welfare Yard, Keynes Farm, Staunton Lane, Whitchurch, Bristol, BS14 0QL.

Reporting to: Welfare Operations Manager

**A varied role carrying out yard duties, providing care for all horses on site and assisting with safety and equine welfare during Equine Assisted Learning sessions. Additional duties taking a proactive role with preparing equines for session work, maintaining fitness and assisting with training new equines for use in Discovery.**

**Key Tasks**:
**Caring for all equines at HorseWorld. Yard and Groom duties to include;**
- Under supervision treatment of minor ailments and administration of veterinary medicines
- Keeping work areas clean and tidy, maintenance of tack and equine equipment used for Discovery
- Assisting with the care of grazing land including tasks such as skipping out paddocks, weed pulling and trough cleaning
- Assisting vets, dentists, farriers, and other specialists

**Supporting Discovery, to include**:

- Preparing equines for Discovery sessions; assisting with bringing in/out, grooming and general care as required
- Observe equines during group sessions to monitor welfare of the horses and assist with equine handling when required.
- Taking a proactive approach to ensure stables, forage rations and door cards are in place ready for equines coming in for sessions.
- Interacting positively with participants / volunteers or any other person whilst overseeing tasks
- Under supervision and working alongside Welfare grooms, take an active role in training horses and ponies ready to start transitioning to Discovery.
- Work alongside Facilitators to integrate horses and ponies into the Discovery program and acclimatise to participants.
- Assisting with other tasks relating to Discovery as directed by Welfare Operations Manager

**Other duties to ensure the effective operation of HorseWorld, to include**:

- Adhering to all statutory health and safety regulations, taking responsibility for health and safety on site for yourself and those around you
- Ensuring any hazards or problems are reported to your Line Manager
- Taking responsibility for clothing, footwear and PPE issued to you
- Assisting with demonstrations to visitors/groups on the Welfare yard as required
- Assisting with promotional activities and special events both on and off site e.g. Open Days
- Assisting with the supervision of student placements and volunteers as required and directed by Welfare Operations Manager
- Attending and contributing to meetings and training and development activities as necessary
- Behaving in a polite and acceptable manner at all times
- Presenting HorseWorld in a way that is consistent with its work and philosophy
- Additional duties as requested

**Person Specification**

**Knowledge and Experience**

**Essential**
- Experience of providing daily care for horses and ponies
- Knowledge of general horse care health and wellbeing
- Knowledge of dietary requirements of horses and ponies
- Sound knowledge of health and safety

**Desirable**
- Experience working in the equine industry
- Experience of being in a child centric setting
- Knowledge/experience of alternative horsemanship methods

**Personal Skills and Qualities**

**Essential**
- Have an understanding of and be comfortable working around challenging children
- Hardworking with ability to prioritise and organise workload
- Confident, patient and calm approach with horses
