**Job responsibilities As a trainee (Band 6)**: 1) Undertake post graduate study to become a qualified sonographer focussing on obstetric and gynaecological scanning. Additional study to complete the abdominal module may be considered at a further date. 2) Work supervised in a specialist area gaining knowledge to, once qualified, work autonomously making judgements on appropriate examination and patient management. 3) Take responsibility for the care of the patient for the duration of their time in ultrasound maintaining dignity, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.

4) Effectively communicate with all grades of staff, carers and patients with adaptation of skills when necessary, using appropriate language and style for the varied situations. Some patients may be elderly, confused, intoxicated, aggressive, have special needs or paediatrics and adaptation of skills is required. Empathy, tact and persuasion skills may be needed. 5) Be able to access patient records using various electronic systems.

Be proficient in using the Radiology RIS and PACS. Able to process data as required on relevant clinical systems. 6) Manipulate complex, expensive equipment, ensuring safe use at all times. 7) Ensure that all examinations are fully, accurately and concisely reported and made available for clinicians to act on, with support from the supervising sonographer.

8) Carry out tasks delegated by the Ultrasound Service Manager. 9) Be involved in discussion, setting up and implementation of new policies for the ultrasound service. 10) Ensure the high standards within the ultrasound team are adhered to. 11) Encourage cohesive working arrangements within a small unit and all other working areas, monitoring patient throughput and redistributing where necessary.

12) Be proficient in controlling violence and aggression and talk down skills for when working with the supervising sonographer. 13) Be proficient in IT skills such as retrieval images on the trusts computerised radiography systems and work
- stations as well as the patient archiving and communication system. 14) Participate in departmental quality assurance (QA) programme of the ultrasound machines. 15) Maintain and record Continued Professional Development.

Participate in formal appraisal programme. 16) Participate in and support the governance programme, setting up ultrasound audits where necessary. 17) Be aware of and practice safe working, adjusting equipment height and position maintaining good posture to protect from musculo-skeletal disorders. 18) Ensure the care of patients during the ultrasound scan is paramount maintaining dignity, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.

19) Participate in mandatory training of Fire safety, Resuscitation and Manual handling procedures and ensure these are followed. 20) Maintain professional registration. 21) Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies and procedures. Upon qualification (Band 7): In addition to the responsibilities above the post holder will be expected to: 1) Work unsupervised in a specialist area with full autonomy.

Make judgements on appropriate examination and patient management. 2) Produce high-quality diagnostic ultrasound reports to aid patient management. 3) Set and maintain high standards within the ultrasound team, encouraging others to work to the same standards. Be able to train and supervise others in working towards those standards.

4) Undertake teaching and supervision of students as required. 5) Support new staff in induction. Teach and promote awareness and compliance with policies and protocols. 6) Deliver ultrasound imaging services to WSFT patients at community locations, including the Diagnostic Imaging Centre (CDC) at Newmarket Hospital.

7) Take responsibility for a specific duty or task e.g. a clinical audit or link role STAFF CAR PARKING Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 18:30. For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital.
