We are looking for a dynamic leader to join the fast paced, highly varied world of Ministerial Correspondence. No two days are the same, an ability to adapt, be flexible and be resilient are a must.
You will lead your team to work across the department to deliver high quality ministerial responses tailored to each minister and the Secretary of State, reflecting their style, tone and preferences. You will work closely with ministers’ private offices, policy and media teams to coordinate and prioritise competing demands, making decisions quickly and with confidence.
Ministerial correspondence is an important means through which MPs and key stakeholders receive information and hold Ministers to account and this role is vital to the department’s success in communicating with the outside world. Insight from MPs and their constituents is valuable in spotting emerging issues and identifying where public interest lies.
**Job description**:
You will lead a large high-performing team across two sites, and need to manage multiple priorities, able to make decisions in real time about what is urgent and important. You will need to advise and direct the operational managers to ensure all correspondence is on track to be answered on time and be responsible for tracking performance against Cabinet Office and department targets.
On a daily basis, you will balance a wide range of tasks - both reactive and proactive - this could be advising policy teams on the best course of action to working across Government departments to pull together a response for No10. Working closely with private offices you will manage the delivery needs with the ministers’ priorities to ensure the smooth running of the correspondence process, adapting with the parliamentary cycle.
As a leader of a large team of 25 you will motivate and engage your teams through a range of forums, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and reflected in decisions that have wellbeing at its heart.

**Role responsibilities**
- Provide clear, confident and inclusive leadership to the team of 25 staff in London and Sheffield, making sure there is clear direction; that they are all supported to develop and deliver, are held to account for their performance and you have a clear strategy for ensuring staff engagement and wellbeing.
- Maintain a clear oversight of the department’s ministerial correspondence, handling performance in terms of quality and timeliness of responses and delivery of management information. You will make sure drafts reflect government policy and meet the preferences of individual ministers. Liaising closely with the managers who deliver the daily operations.
- As part of the senior management team, have a wider leadership role across the division, leading improvement projects to deliver one of our people focused priorities.
- Work closely with and build strong relationships with policy teams, private office and communications teams to look ahead and put in place plans to manage fluctuating volumes, identify issues and agree mitigations.
- Use continuous improvement to review, and work with the team, to continue to drive up performance and efficiencies within the correspondence process.
- Provide mentoring and coaching support to the team to assist in the swift unblocking of problematic correspondence and recognising when to intervene and escalate issues.
- Demonstrate an ability to be resilient when working to tight deadlines and flexibility to support the team where needed to provide a quality service.
- Undertake HR activities for the team including managing recruitment campaigns and onboarding of new starters.
