You will join the Charity Commission’s Legal Policy team, helping to shape the development of the legal and regulatory framework for charities and ensure the legal integrity of Commission policy proposals, guidance, and operational projects. It’s an exciting opportunity where you will have high impact, directly influencing external relationships and the formation and interpretation of Charity law policy at a national level.

You will support the Commission’s strategic aims and operational goals by providing high quality professional legal advice across the Commission. The Legal Directorate has 18 Legal Advisers in total, split into five teams: Legal Policy, Charitable Status, Legal Compliance and Enforcement, Legal Charity Services and Litigation. The teams operate as a tight peer group, guiding and supporting each other where their different disciplines overlap. This vacancy is in our Legal Policy team.

**Job description**:

- Providing authoritative legal advice to support the development of new and revised guidance for charities, using strategic judgment, innovation and versatility to advise and, at times, develop new policy positions.
- Assessing risk and advising on mitigation in highly sensitive and high
- profile policy areas
- taking into account a rapidly changing environment.
- Assessing and engaging with developments affecting charities, including influencing and commenting on relevant government consultations, policy proposals and draft legislation.
- Ensuring that the Commission’s regulatory policy approach and operational projects are informed by and developed in accordance with the legal framework.
- Representing the Commission viewpoint at meetings with government departments to ensure that Charity Law is at the heart of their regulation and policy-making.
- Supporting the upskilling of colleagues across the Commission through the transfer of knowledge and training delivery.
- Representing a national regulator with key external stakeholders such as trustees and professional advisers as appropriate.
- Maintaining important relationships at a strategic level as well as engaging individually to consult and negotiate to achieve mutually acceptable solutions.

**Person specification**:

- Strong legal advice-giving skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills including ability to explain complex information tailored to the needs of the audience.
- Strong legal research and analytical skills including the ability to interpret and advise on unfamiliar areas of law. Ability to think strategically, and creatively, to understand legal issues in their wider context, to identify and assess risks to support effective decision making.
- Ability to plan and prioritise competing demands to ensure performance targets and deadlines are met.
- Ambassadorial skills to represent the legal function internally and externally.
- Effectively managing a workload/task throughout its lifecycle.
- Delivering accurate, effective, and timely legal advice.
- Maintaining a professional approach when presented with a challenging discussion by understanding needs, managing expectations, and progressing issues to a constructive outcome.
- Solicitor or Barrister qualified to practice in England and Wales
- Ability to handle data and information sensitively in accordance with the business procedures and the law.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.
