Butcher

We are seeking a talented butcher to join our busy Butchery team at Ben’s Farm Shop. The role is based at Staverton Farm Shop but will also include the butcher counters at our other shops from time to time.
The Butchery Department at Staverton is the butchery hub of our business and includes a busy retail counter and a thriving production butchery. The provenance and quality of our meat is very important to us, so we work with trusted local farmers so that we know exactly where our meat comes from, how the livestock is raised, and we can tell customers all about it.
From Staverton we supply the rest of the business, including our other shops and farm kitchen. On the retail side we prepare and supply carcasses, primals and cuts to our butchery counters at Yealmpton and Exeter and pre-packed meat to Totnes. We make our own sausages, cure and slice our own bacon, make a comprehensive range of burgers, meatballs, skewers, meat stocks and seasonal products. We also produce a range of cured meats and this is an area we plan to develop further.
Our retail butchery is all about providing a well-stocked counter and professional, friendly, knowledgeable customer service, helping customers to make informed choices, offering advice on particular cuts or cooking methods where required.
Our production butchery works to a weekly production plan in order to maintain stock of all the items in our portfolio. Quality and consistency are vital, as is the ability to work efficiently and to set recipes and procedures.
The successful butcher will ideally have skills and experience in both retail and production butchery techniques, and a willingness to learn new skills. We are ideally looking for an experienced and trained butcher with the skills to develop the production portfolio, particularly cured meats, so relevant butchery qualifications and time in a similar role would be an advantage. However, we would also consider a part-skilled or trainee with the right attitude and commitment.
This is full time role working approx. 40 hours over 5 days, although the shifts may vary, and will involve weekend and bank holiday working
**Person Specification**:
Experience of working in a retail and/or production butchery, ideally with relevant qualification
