The Fire Safety Advisor is accountable to the Senior Fire Safety Advisor. As part of the Fire Safety Team, you will be responsible for providing specialist Fire Safety advice to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and any other associated healthcare organisation (via contracts or SLA’s) involving all Fire Safety matters relating to people and premises.

Working as part of a Fire Safety Team within the Division of Estates and Facilities, you will be responsible for promoting compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, Health Technical Memorandum, Guidance and that the RWT fire policy is implemented and effective.

Undertake ‘suitable and sufficient’ assessments of fire risks within premises owned, occupied or under the control of the Trust and any other designated premises contracted by agreement.

You will also be involved with developing and delivering an extensive programme of general and specialist Fire Safety training to a wide audience, in order to achieve compliance with KPI’s determined by the Trust Fire Safety Manager/Senior Fire Safety Advisor as agreed by the Fire Safety Group.

In addition, you will be expected to provide specialist Fire Safety advice during construction, refurbishment or any other building alterations.

The Trust is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join the fire safety team.

The successful applicant must have a sound understanding of fire safety legislation and ‘Firecode’,have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels and be able to deliver theoretical and practical training that is both engaging and memorable.

There will be a requirement to undertake fire risk assessments, audits and provide practical advice on all relevant fire safety issues.

The successful applicant must be able to manage their own schedule and meet deadlines.

There will be a need for flexibility in working hours including limited evenings and weekend working, although the majority of duties will be undertaken during normal office hours.

Travelling to other sites will be a requirement; therefore access to a suitable vehicle is necessary.

The Fire Safety Team within Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is a well established team, with over 100 years combined experience within the fire sector.

We are a busy team that operate from New Cross Hospital, however work across multiple sites across Walsall, the Black Country, Shrewsbury and Telford, so travelling to different sites is expected.

The head of the team is very supportive of Continued Professional Development; we hold CPD events every 6-8 weeks, in addition to formal training and qualifications the team undertake.
- To advise managers and nominated officers (Fire) on the implementation of Fire Safety Policies and the organisation and management of fire precautions in the Trust’s premises in accordance with legislation, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and other official guidance.
- To advise on fire precaution measures including the implication of proposed legislation and recommending the order of priorities.
- To report on the standard of fire safety in all the Trust’s and contracted/ SLA premises and those areas where staff work, participating in fire risk assessment surveys (which may be part of a multi-disciplinary exercise), advising on matters of risk management relating to fire safety in accordance with HTM 05 Managing healthcare fire safety.
- To carry out fire risk assessments, as required by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005,in complex buildings and maintain records of the significant findings.
- To liaise with Estates staff and planning teams, contractors, local building control and Fire Authority in the specification of fire precautions in new and existing premises including alterations.
- Develop fire strategy solutions to fire design plans for new buildings and refurbishment.
- To take responsibility for the preparation and delivery of fire safety training programmes for relevant staff and responding to requests for training from managers (Trust, contracted/ SLA).
- To provide fire safety training for all staff in healthcare premises in conjunction with Nominated Officers (Fire) and in accordance with HTM 05 - 01 Managing healthcare fire safety and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, including the organisation of fire drills and the training of staff as appropriate.
- To develop computer records of bespoke staff training and reporting them on a monthly basis to the Fire Safety Manager (or deputy).
- To provide a Fire Safety Advisor role in respect of monitoring the implementation by others of regular maintenance of firefighting appliances and other equipment, including the checking of fire alarm systems/equipment and maintaining records.
