**Band 7**

**Job Purpose**:

- The analysis of Real Time PCR data generated by the clinical laboratory team to provide results of COVID 19 diagnosis and to verify and release these results.
- To provide assurance to the Laboratory Senior Management team, through data analysis of the credibility of test results produced within the laboratory.

**PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY**

**Managerial**

- Review, verify and release test results, maintains legible work records and enters findings into the laboratory information system (LIMS).
- Achieve, demonstrate, maintain and promotes scientific & technical excellence, and by example ensure high professional standards amongst the scientific, technical and support staff within the laboratory.
- To ensure that all staff meet the necessary standards of speed, quality and accuracy, appropriate to the level of experience and training.
- To be support the induction, training & competencies of staff within the section. This includes ensuring contemporaneous completion of all induction, training & competency records.
- Support and help to develop the training of the laboratory staff at all levels.
- Work with and supervise the work of staff in conjunction with other senior members of staff.
- Working with the Laboratory Shift Manager, Lead Scientist, develop, coordinate and maintain the laboratory's programme of continuous service review in accordance with internal and external quality systems and within the framework of continuous quality improvement.
- To work with the quality manager to ensure all necessary quality standards are met, including UKAS ISO15189.
- To be responsible for the establishment, and participate in the auditing, of all working procedures and protocols within your area of responsibility.
- To be responsible for the promotion, identification and implementation of efficiency measures within the section. Work with senior staff in the other sections to ensure that any efficiency measures identified within the section are implemented.
**Communication**

- Communicates any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the delivery of the service or the department to the shift manager promptly and other affected sections.
- Maintain clear and effective lines of communication with all staff involving motivational and training skills at all times.
- Maintains professional contacts with professional bodies, educational institutions and Biomedical Scientists in other NHS laboratories.
**Scientific & Professional**

- To possess highly developed, advanced specialist scientific skills.
- Maintain a high standard of professional knowledge and competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out.
- To work, if required, with high risk samples and cultures, at Containment Level 3, and to be aware when circumstances arise necessitating the move of normal laboratory investigations (Containment Level 2) to a higher containment level.
- To act as a point of reference for staff in order to deal with difficult judgements of cases.
- The post holder will demonstrate the high level of skill to perform complex manual, semi-automated and automated analytical techniques as applicable, meeting turnaround times.
- To plan and prioritise workload on a day-to-day basis.
- Identify abnormal or unexpected results and ensure prompt reporting, follow up and referral to medical staff, and to other reporting bodies, as required.
- To understand the principles underlying the analytical processes used in your area of work so as to maintain their operation and quality of results.
- To use the laboratory IT systems in order to accurately record the results of scientific investigations and to handle enquiries.
- To operate analytical equipment within your discipline and within the laboratory, some of which will be highly complex and require specialist training.
- To ensure that agreed internal and external quality control procedures are carried out and appropriate corrective measures are undertaken whenever necessary.
- Ensure all staff observe all laboratory, national and European Health & Safety regulations relevant to the service.
- To continually update your knowledge and skills whilst documenting this in your Continuing Professional Development folder.

- Comply with the codes of professional conduct set out by the professional body of which registration is required for the post.
- Ensure they are familiar with the Risk Management Framework, follow policies, procedures and safe systems of work, make known any hazards or risks that they identify and take all necessary actions to reduce risk.
- Maintain the prevention and control of infection and fully comply with all current Trust Infection Control policies and procedures.
