Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust Full time

We are looking for a caring and motivated Genomic Practitioner to work on an exciting initiative to enhance the cultural sensitivity of genetic services, particularly for families of Pakistani heritage. The genomic practitioner is a newly established Healthcare Science Practitioner role within the Genomic Counselling work stream. The purpose of the role is to provide additional input to services for this under-served group to improve access to genetics services and provide equitable opportunities for families to make informed reproductive decisions.

Working within the clinical genetics department, the role will involve communicating with patients and their families directly by phone, video call and face-to-face to obtain family and medical histories, consent, medical records and test results to facilitate the diagnosis of rare disease for patients and their families. This includes enhanced contact prior to and at the point of referral and after genetic testing and counselling to check understanding, expectations, language needs, questions and misconceptions. The Genomic Practitioner will also help to facilitate access to the service, particularly amongst marginalised communities and families who are difficult to engage.

Other roles include facilitating patient support days and patient engagement events, providing education and advocacy in the community and in training health and education staff about genetics and close relative marriage.
