Applications are invited for the position of Contact Lens (CL) / Low Visual Aids (LVA) Clinic Technical Assistant and Coordinator

15 hours - based at the University Hospitals of North Midlands
- Royal Stoke site

Our contact lens and LVA service has undergone a recent service redesign and we are looking for someone who has clinical co-ordination skills, but would like to have a mix of clinical/patient contact. Clinically the post holder would be involved in the teaching in use of low vision aids and teaching about the insertion & removal of contact lenses. Any previous ophthalmological/ optical assistant experience would be beneficial, but on the job training for the role will be given.

The team will compromise of Contact Lens and Anterior Segment Principal, Specialist Optometrist (this post), a Low Visual Aid Clinician and a Contact Lens / LVA Clinic technical assistant and Co-ordinator.

You will be professionally responsible to the CL & anterior segment Principal / managerially to the Head of Orthoptics & Refractive Optometry.

You will be working closely with our diverse team of 11 orthoptists and their support team - 2 paediatric Consultant Ophthalmologists / Corneal specialist Ophthalmologist plus other ophthalmology consultant/team.

To work as an integral member of the CL/LVA team assisting all members of the team.

This will include varied administrative duties, word processing, answering telephone enquiries, clinic co-ordination including organisation and implementation of processes of out-patient waiting lists, making / altering appointments.

To organise waiting lists, clinics, appointments and timetables to ensure Trust and departmental targets and standards are met and maintained.

To support the contact lens specialist in teaching the insertion and removal of contact lenses and instruct patients about adapting to, wearing and caring for contact lenses.

To support LVA Specialist Orthoptist in teaching and guiding patients with the use of LVAs.
