**About the role**
You will be working with students aged 3-11 years old within this mixed mainstream primary school's specialist onsite provision for Autism. All students who attend the provision have an EHCP statement of Autism and require additional support to be able tobest access their education. Students here spend 50% of their time within the mainstream classroom alongside their mainstream peers, and 50% in the provision receiving interventions in core areas such as English, Maths and speech and language support and otherareas they struggle to engage in within the mainstream class. You will assist students both within the provision academically and with behavioural support to ensure that they and their peers are able to engage with their lessons to their best ability. Youmay be required to take students out of the classroom for behaviour interventions or emotional regulation i.e. engaging in sensory activities to return students to a level of emotional stability with which they are able to re-enter the classroom. All studentswithin the ARP have some verbal ability, however experience using PECS and Makaton is desirable for applicants. This role will be full-time, Monday to Friday during term time and begin in January 2023.
This role is ideal for someone with paid or personal experience with individuals with Autism, particularly in a classroom setting, however other avenues of experience will be considered i.e. support workers, personal experience, nannies to children withAutism.
**About the school and provision**
This is a lovely mainstream primary school, catering to students ages 3-11 years old in Kingsbury within the London Borough of Brent. They have a dedicated Alternative Resource Provision onsite for students with Autism to help students of all abilities toengage with the national curriculum and provide support to those who most need it. Their aim is to help pupils overcome the obstacles associated with autism so that they can develop their social and communication skills and make academic progress. There isan expectation that children attending the ARP have some level of functional language and are able to understand and follow instructions. An ability to pay attention is also a requirement as the children are required to sit and attend to lessons within a groupof seven for up to 15-20 minutes at a time, with a teacher and two TAs supporting the class. Currently each class within the provision has a maximum of 7 pupils to ensure that students have adequate support with a moderate staff to pupil ratio.
The ARP uses the TEACCH approach so prior experience and knowledge of this method of learning for students with Autism is highly desirable.
