The JOF will join the existing Palatine ward TYA and Haematology clinical teams to support the both services in ensuring that all patients on the 31 bedded-ward have robust daily clinical cover. Existing ward teams include 2 Haematology ST doctors, 1 TYA Oncology Senior clinical fellow, and 3 x ward-based IMTs. The Haematology service is supported by an attending consultant, with 2 scheduled consultant ward rounds per week and daily consultant level input as required. The TYA medical oncology service has 1 scheduled consultant ward round per week, with additional consultant level input as required.

In addition to the TYA Oncology Senior Clinical Fellow based on Palatine ward, the TYA oncology service is also supported by the Adult medical oncology registrar on an as-required basis. The TYA day unit (YOU) is comprised of 4 chairs and 2 beds. The unit supports TYA patients attending for elective out-patient chemotherapy or supportive care (e.g. blood transfusional support etc.) but will also be an assessment point for TYA patients attending on an as-required basis for clinical review due to specific patient/staff concerns, and for patients who require assessment/clerking prior to being admitted to Palatine ward for further treatment.

It is currently supported by 1 x Haematology Senior Clinical Fellow, and the TYA Oncology Senior Clinical Fellow. There may be an ad-hoc requirement for the JOF to provide additional cover to this service, and also to the nurse-led ambulatory care unit on an as-required basis. The JOF will not be expected to prescribe chemotherapy. The JOF will not be expected to make treatment decisions without senior input/direction.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and in addition to the above, will require exceptional communication skills in order to work effectively/collaboratively within the broader teams, but also in order to engage and build up rapport with patients and their families undergoing complex oncology/Haematology treatments. The appointee will need good time management/organizational skills to prioritize the patient workload. There will be an opportunity to attend the Haematology departmental weekly teaching sessions, and applicants will be encouraged to attend TYA meetings including the TYA psychosocial meeting and TYA MDT meetings. Clinical Provide medical cover for TYA oncology patients on Palatine Ward, under supervision of senior clinical fellow/TYA oncology consultants.

Provide medical cover for TYA and adult Haematology patients on Palatine Ward, under supervision of Haematology STs/Consultants. Provide cross cover for TYA oncology and Haematology patients attending the Young Oncology day unit and Ambulatory Care Unit for planned medical review/blood test reviews/transfusion support/chemotherapy attendances as required. Provide cover for non-scheduled emergency YOU Day Unit attendances when required, with appropriate senior level support. To participate in Haematology/TYA outpatient clinics for enhanced learning.

To be given the opportunity to attend the weekly Principal Treatment Centre Network TYA MDT meeting. To consider opportunities for career development through participation in departmental audit/service evaluation projects. To undertake any other reasonable duties as necessary. Patient care and communication Be flexible, adaptable and communicate positively at all times.

Provide information at an appropriate level of understanding to ensure a patient and/or carer is fully informed at all stages of the pathway. Liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team as appropriate Communicate with patients, families and carers with empathy and reassurance. Responsibility to safeguarding and promote the welfare of children and young people. To co-operate with other agencies to protect individual children and young people from harm.

Research, Audit and Quality Improvement Have a sound knowledge of research governance, clinical governance, research ethics, and work within and comply with the principles of ICH GCP. To support clinical audits, report results and where necessary, to implement change. To encourage and facilitate the development of treatments by participation in specific clinical research projects. Disseminate relevant research findings to colleagues and members of the health professions via presentation and publication.

Identify and engage with small tests of change in order to continually improve the quality and efficiency of care provide to patients. Show flexibility and adaptability to learn new skills that may be associated with new clinical trials. Contribute to the Trusts governance processes and framework.
