**Research Assistant**: £29,619 to £31,411 per annum

**Research Associate**: £32,348 to £34,308 per annum

The Role

Do you have a prior research background in precision manufacturing?

The School of Engineering at Newcastle University are seeking to appoint an experienced Research Assistant/Associate to perform research on ultrasonic vibration assisted machining and evaluate its performance in processing brittle materials. The project is in collaboration with university spinout company Microbritt.

This work is funded by Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF). You will work under the supervision of Dr Dehong Huo and form part of the diverse and supportive Design, Manufacture and Materials group in the School of Engineering.

You will have a PhD in manufacturing or mechanical engineering, and experience of machining experiment is desirable. Knowledge and skills on vibration assisted machining and sensor technology would be advantageous.

The position is fixed-term, tenable until 31st July 2023 in the first instance, and is full-time (37 hours per week).

Key Accountabilities
To work on the different tasks in the research project to generate project deliverables in a timely manner and meet the project objectives
To perform machining experiment and collect data
To setup the process/tool condition monitoring sensors and analyse the data
To present research findings to industry stakeholders
To draft and publish research papers based on this work

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience in precision or ultra-precision machining, using either experimental or modelling approach
Experience in using sensors for machining process
Knowledge of machining science
Knowledge and experience in surface characterisation
Evidence of high-quality journal publications and internationally recognised papers
Desirable
Knowledge of vibration assisted machining technology
Knowledge of machining of brittle materials
Experience in tool condition monitoring algorithm development

Attributes and Behaviour
Demonstrably positive and professional attitude to safety and safe working
Ability to take responsibility for research and work without day to day supervision
Strong interpersonal and team-working skills
High level of analytical and problem-solving capacity

**Qualifications**:
PhD awarded within the area of manufacturing, mechanical engineering or a closely related field
