VOLUNTARY POST

Friday club developed over 25 years ago as an offshoot of the speech therapy sessions patients attended at Mary’s hospital following a Stroke or Neurological injury. However, since its inception, the emphasis has shifted slightly and is now largely a support group for patients with such injuries in an informal setting with the emphasis still definitely on communication skills.

The sessions take place every Friday. The activities undertaken aim to build confidence in communication using all means e.g. by use of the voice, gesture, pen and paper etc. During the sessions both volunteers and service users work together in a relaxed atmosphere. Activities undertaken include card games, board games, quizzes, exchanges of news and views on current events. All undertaken with an appreciation and awareness of individual abilities.
All of the above are undertaken within the guidelines of the Trust in regard of respect, dignity and confidentiality for all members of the group.

It’s also essential that all members, volunteers, and service users, maintain a sense of humour in order to keep the atmosphere light and relaxed.

Oxleas offers a wide range of NHS healthcare services to people in community and secure environment settings. Our services include community health care such as district nursing and speech and language therapy, care for people with learning disabilities and mental health care such as psychiatry, nursing and therapies. Our multidisciplinary teams look after people of all ages and we work in close partnership with other parts of the NHS, local councils and the voluntary sector and through our new provider collaboratives. Our 4,300 members of staff work in many different settings including hospitals, clinics, prisons, secure hospitals, children’s centres, schools and people’s homes.

We have over 125 sites in a variety of locations in the South of England. In London we operate within the Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley Greenwich and into Kent. We manage hospital sites including Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and Memorial Hospital, Woolwich, as well as the Bracton Centre, our medium secure unit for people with mental health needs. We are the largest NHS provider of prison health services providing healthcare to prisons within Devon, Dorset, Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, Kent and South London. Under supervision and guidance from the placement supervisor to perform the below taskes.

Assist in setting up and packing away for the session.

Assist in engaging the service users by explaining the activities

To assist individuals to have a successful outcome

Communicate with service users, supervisor, and other multidisciplinary teams as appropriate.

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times in line with Trust policies and procedures

To support clients to take an active part in activities

Promote the independence of clients. Encourage clients to take part in activities in so far as they are able to.

To report to staff any concerns regarding clients attending the group.
