**Hours: Flexible working hours to reflect operational demands including weekends, nights and standard working days culminating in a 37.5 hour week**

**JOB PURPOSE**
- Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of operations and safety within the Ferry Terminal including coordination of the freight team Shift A&B and loading and unloading of the ferry
- Management of Freight Team
- Be key point of contact for customers
- Focus on safe and efficient yard management and loading/unloading of ferry
- Ensuring all procedures and Risk assessments are completed to high standard, communicated to the freight team and reviewed on a regular basis
- Develop and modernise processes utilising appropriate technology
- Embody the ports values

**PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Supervise loading of the Ferry 25-50% of the time during peak periods Tues
- Sat day
- With assistance of team leader organise freight team shift rota’ ensuring that adequate driver provision are in place throughout the year, including cover of A/L and Sickness
- Monitor and approve overtime making sure that OT is manged correctly and that absences are correctly recorded and work to a target budget
- Ensure operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, including operation of ramps and co ordinating loading when required
- Ensure that the vessel is secured and released safely whilst in line with procedures and best practice
- Ensure safe movement of traffic throughout the terminal in line with procedures and in a safe manner
- Development accurate risk assessments and procedures and ensure that they are distributed and understood
- Work with key stakeholders including hauliers and the ferry operator as well as UKBF, VOSA and the Police
- Monitor vehicle tally’s and freight logs and ensure figures are documented correctly and received by port administrator in good time and complete spreadsheets in absence of Port Administrator
- Develop and improve method of work with a particular focus on integrating technology to achieve a paper free system
- Give team briefs to both shifts on a regular bases including sharing data on performance
- Work with team leaders and freight team to ensure that damage is mínimalised and that any incidents are reported and resolved, this includes check for trailer damage prior to loading and notifying the carrier if the trailer is not fit to be towed - working to target costs
- Keep freight yard organised and tidy ensure Freight Operatives are carrying out check and activities to maintain a clean and safe yard
- Ensure Procedures are followed and ensure relevant associated documentation is produced/completed in good time and audited
- Work closely with Engineering team to ensure assets are in working order and available
- Conduct regular team meetings and 1:1’s within your responsible departments and ensure that any issues are raised and where possible present solutions
- Work through HR processes when required and ensure detailed record are maintained.
- Carry out yearly staff appraisals for you team with the support of the Team Leaders
- Take a leading role in the development of Competency Management System as well as training and assessing those competencies
- Such other duties of a comparable nature as may be required.

**RISK MANAGEMENT**
- Take a lead role in the development of risk assessments, procedures and COSHH assessments
- Ensure that you and your team are alert to all possible risks, raising any concerns and reporting events through the Assurance Framework and where possible resolve
- Be familiar with and adhere to all relevant company policies, procedures and Local Work Instructions
- Represent PDFT in relevant meetings
- Ensure all relevant health and safety checks are carried out and recorded including maintenance checks of plant and vehicles
- Development accurate risk assessments and procedures and ensure that they are distributed and understood
- Promote safety and operational efficiency throughout your department

**RESPONSIBLE PERSON**
- In conjunction with the Operation Co Ordinator ensure SEMS are implemented within your operational/business unit and that staff are briefed and understand SEMS, procuring training where necessary and feedback amendments when required

**PERSON SPECIFICATION**

**Essential**:

- Previous experience in operational environments with heavy machinery/HGV’/Logistics
- Able to work proactive and contribute innovative ways of working to improve operations
- Proven history of working in a complex H&S environment to a high level, including production of procedures and risk assessments
- Experience in implementing operational, procedural and cultural initiatives
- Ability to work using your own initiative or as part of a team
- Good level of communication skills and ability to deal with difficult situations
