**Trainee Mortgage Adviser**

Mortgage advisers are problem solvers, often solving issues that clients are not yet aware of, or helping them avoid future problems by using your service. By building then drawing on your experience and expertise, you will be able to foresee hurdles and help clients overcome them.

As a trainee mortgage broker, you'll build an in-depth knowledge of the market and mortgage sales process, to advise clients and find them mortgage and protection products suitable for theirs and their family’s needs and circumstances, which you will be able to do following completion of your mortgage qualification.

You’ll learn how to determine how much someone can borrow and provide advice on this, as well as educate and inform prospects and clients on the other relevant costs, whilst setting an expectation of timescales involved.

During training, you will be given many opportunities to talk to clients. You’ll also learn and develop by sitting in and listening carefully to the adviser’s conversations, and having an active part in helping an experienced adviser find the most suitable solution.

Frequently, you’ll be talking to mortgage lenders during your training, using your effective questioning and listening skills, so you can identify solutions for first time buyers, home movers, for people who need to remortgage, and for those with property portfolios. Without the lenders, none of this would happen, so getting to know them and their way of operating, as well as building relationships with our dedicated contacts at each lender is vital.

Learning how to converse with prospects and existing clients will form a large part of your training, because having the right conversations with the right people, will play a significant part in your success. Listening is one of the most important skills you will hone in this role, because this creates trust, and enables you to find solutions that truly work for those you are trying to help. It also helps those important conversations work to everyone’s benefit.

Mortgage advisers/brokers are responsible for ensuring that those who are borrowing money understand the risks; by helping people look ahead to the future, you will assist to mitigate those risks by advising on appropriate insurances and referring to other financial professionals like will writers, accountants, tax advisers and financial planners. By doing a thorough assessment, you will help people protect themselves against financial hardship for them and their families during their time of need.

**Responsibilities**:
Once fully trained, you will:

- conduct meetings with your clients to gather information on their financial situation, including their monthly income and expenditure, their short-term and long-term objectives, as well as probe any likely changes
- have an in-depth understanding of, and explain the different types of mortgage and then recommend the most suitable for them, and offer general advice on the home-buying and/or the remortgage process
- liaise with mortgage lenders, estate agents, and solicitors
- meet and exceed service and revenue targets
- follow strict regulations to protect you, the client, and the industry

**What to Expect**:
As a trainee you will start as an assistant administrator to an experienced adviser; your progression timeline will be dependent on the your commitment to progress, ability to learn quickly, integrity and passion for high levels of service and attention to detail

You will be office based 5 days a week up until you are deemed fully competent, and depending on your progress, some home working may be offered after a period of success as an adviser.

If successful in your career progression path to become an adviser/broker, you will be given a laptop and mobile phone, enabling you to help clients who can only talk to you outside of normal working hours. As an adviser or mortgage broker, local travel may be required for visiting clients, so a driving license is essential

**Qualifications**:
To become a mortgage adviser you must successfully complete the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) qualification which consists of three exams. Supporting material to study and pass will be provided.
