**Job Details**:
This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from 18th March 2024 to contract end date of 28th February 2029.

**Information on Project**:
This project is an SFI-funded collaborative investigation including teams with expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, clinical medicine and computational biology. The team aim to create a novel, targeted therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-induced osteopathy. T2DM involves a paradoxical osteopathy where an increase in bone mineral density results in fragility fractures. Fractures in individuals with T2DM take longer to heal, reduce mobility and elongate hospital stays. This team will molecularly characterize the osteogenic bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells from people living with or without T2DM, then correlate those changes with biomechanical changes in the bone. We will then create molecular therapies to mediate the impact of T2DM on bone and assess its efficacy.

**Duties**:

- Coordinate a tissue donation programme by liaising with academic and clinical teams
- Maintain organized records of the biobank contents
- Adhesion to GDPR for record keeping and data retention
- Isolate, culture and differentiate primary cells from donated human bone marrow
- Protocol optimization, SOP writing
- Conduct biochemical and molecular biology assays, then analyse the resultant data
- Histological processing of tissue (embedding, sectioning, staining)
- Assist all laboratory partners through the My Green Labs certification process
- Survey the current environmental impact of collaborating laboratories using the My Green Labs guidance documents
- Implement the suggested changes in infrastructure and/or ways of working
- Laboratory coordination activities
- Securing quotes, placing orders, collecting orders
- Health and safety coordination
- Adhesion to project timelines
- Contributing to report writing, manuscript writing
- Working closely with other REMEDI team members as part of a laboratory community
- Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

**Qualifications/Skills required**:
**Essential Requirements**:

- BSc or MSc qualification in the biologic sciences, preferably with emphasis on mammalian cell biology
- Experience with adherent cell culture
- Evidence of qualitative and quantitative skills
- Evidence of capacity to learn technical skills, then perform the same tasks independently, reproducibly
- Evidence of highly detailed, accurate record keeping
- Evidence of a continued interest in sustainability
- Excellent time management, written and oral communication skills
- Evidence of interpersonal skills suited for both academic and clincal environments
- Capacity for creative, lateral thinking, problem solving and troubleshooting

- Experience with mammalian tissue culture
