**POST: LOCUM CONSULTANT IN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY (FORENSIC COMMUNITY TEAM)**

**BASE: DOUGLAS INCH CENTRE (WEST GLASGOW AMBULATORY CARE HOSPITAL) AND LEVERNDALE HOSPITAL**

This post will be open to applicants with either a background working in Forensic Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry (ideally with appropriate experience working in forensic or prison settings).

The post is available for an initial 12 month period from July 2023, although may be extended by mutual agreement.

There are two Forensic Community Mental Health Teams (FCMHT) in Glasgow to cover Glasgow & Clyde, as well as a separate Forensic Community Learning Disability Team (FCLDT) and this post is based within the Glasgow FCMHT at the Douglas Inch Centre (West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Centre). The case-load involves management of a high proportion of Restricted Patients, as well as providing advice and forensic opinions on referrals from colleagues in wider psychiatric services and assessing patients who are being considered for discharge from in-patient forensic services. The Consultant provides expert medical advice and leadership to a full multi-disciplinary team including psychology, nursing, occupational therapy and pharmacy colleagues.

The post-holder also provides in-patient cover to a number of patients within the 9 bedded open pre-discharge unit (Boulevard ward) at Leverndale Hospital. This post involves close liaison between in-patient and community teams, as well as external agencies including MAPPA, The Scottish Government, Social Work, Housing and Support Providers.

In total the low secure service has 52 forensic in-patient beds across 5 wards for men and women with mental illness or learning disability and forensic needs. The Directorate are in the process of commissioning additional low secure beds to further develop the service and manage demand.

The Medium secure services is at Rowanbank Clinic, a 74 bed purpose built unit at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. Rowanbank covers the West of Scotland region and hosts the national medium secure learning disability service.

There are close links between all parts of the service.

In addition, the post will include sessional input to the NHS GG&C prison mental health teams (HMP Barlinnie, HMP Greenock and HMP Low Moss). Prison Healthcare is not managed by the Directorate but it is anticipated that the post-holder would be involved in ongoing Quality Improvement projects with colleagues to improve the delivery of mental health care to the prison population.

On call responsibilities cover the forensic psychiatry service, and the rota is separate to the adult mental health on-call rota. Consultants on the forensic rota provide telephone supervision to Higher trainees covering the local sheriff court diversion scheme (Glasgow, Paisley, Greenock and Dumbarton). On-call duties are shared with other consultant forensic psychiatrist colleagues on an approximately 1:13 rota.

Education

Core and specialist trainees are attached on placement to the forensic service with approved training consultants. Placements are also offered to undergraduate medical students as part of their psychiatry teaching. There are active CPD and audit programmes within the Forensic and wider mental health service for medical staff to access.

All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.

Applicants should be eligible for recognition as Approved Medical Practitioner with regard to Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003, or willing to complete appropriate training.
