**Job summary**:
The Cities and Local Growth Unit (CLGU) is an innovative jointly-owned Unit of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).

We lead Government's decentralisation and local economic growth agenda. We empower all places - from rural areas to major cities, from prosperous places to those facing challenges in the modern economy - to bolster their potential through boosting economic growth. We do this by connecting places and government through our outstanding combination of regional and Whitehall-based teams.

The CLGU Areas Directorate comprises place-based teams whose role is to grow effective partnerships between central government and local growth bodies. This includes having lead oversight for economic development programmes in particular places; managing the relationship between central government and local growth institutions; and providing expert advice on the economic, social and political reality of our places, to ensure central government’s local growth policy and programmes have the maximum positive impact in our places.

We are passionate believers in the value of local expertise and the need for a “Beyond Whitehall” mentality, and we live this in our daily work linking central government to local institutions, communities, and businesses.

As an Area Coordinator you will play a key role in monitoring and delivering local growth programmes across the area. You will also develop a network of contacts and a wealth of knowledge about the area, which will be used to brief Ministers and support policy development.

You will be required to develop a good understanding of local growth programmes, including the Levelling Up Fund, Towns Fund, Future High Streets Fund, UKSPF and play a critical role in funding delivery including the assessment and assurance of funding for local bids.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to develop place-based programme and project experience, is confident and adept in working with external partners, can draft high quality briefing for a range of audiences, and effectively engages in corporate activities to drive a high-performing team culture.

**Job description**:

- As a Area Coordinator Cumbria, you will:
- become a skilled practitioner on economic growth and the local political and economic context
- develop strong local knowledge and expertise of a place, including its politics, economy, challenges and opportunities, you will lean on this knowledge to summarise and present economic intelligence on your area to both departments
- make and maintain productive relationships in your area including with Local Authorities, the Local Enterprise Partnership, Higher & Further Education institutions, local business organisations and others
- support the team to work with local partners to appraise and deliver local growth funding programmes including for example, the £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund, Towns Fund, UKSPF, UK Community Ownership Fund, and others
- use your knowledge of sectors, clusters, devolution and local government to support DBT and DLUHC priorities, developing strong day-to-day productive relationships with policy officials across a range of areas including housing, sector teams, and transport
- provide quality advice on particular challenges or opportunities for the area, and work with colleagues to develop solutions
- prepare quality briefing material, and draft well-written pieces of correspondence, tailored for the audience (usually Ministers and Senior Civil Servants) on key issues
- support the efficient running of the team by taking responsibility for important corporate or organisational tasks
- be an active member of the NW team, helping to promote an inclusive atmosphere

**Person specification**:

- We are looking for curious and keen people who wish to be at the heart of the Unit's work on the Levelling Up agenda in the North West.
- You should:
- have the interpersonal skills that enable you to be an excellent communicator and influencer (verbal &written) and to grow & manage your stakeholder networks
- be dynamic and capable of delivering at pace on often fast-moving agendas.
- have strong organisational skills
- have proven analytical skills and attention to detail that will enable you to provide quality oversight of the levelling up programmes in your area.
