As the UK’s renewable transport fuels regulator, the RTFO Unit is a world-leading centre of expertise on the environmental sustainability of low carbon fuels. We deliver one of Government’s primary policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through decarbonising UK transport.

In this role, no day will be the same. One morning you could be resolving a complex sustainability query from a fuel supplier while in the afternoon you could be developing options and briefing ministers on how to use the scheme to encourage use of new emerging fuels such as hydrogen. The next day you could be presenting to international renewable fuel regulators.

This is a challenging and exciting area of work. You will join the team at a critical time for transport decarbonisation. We are growing the RTFO scheme, looking to introduce a specific mandate for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), and reviewing how we better incentivise the use of novel fuel types like renewable hydrogen.

**Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to**:

- ** Initiate and manage technical projects.** You will investigate emerging sustainability issues, evaluating the risk they pose to the scheme while identifying and implementing solutions.
- ** Collaborate with external stakeholders**: You will work with international regulators, industry, and other relevant organisations to address emerging challenges to the sustainability and integrity of the scheme.
- ** Review the role of third-party assurance in the RTFO**: You will review the role that third-party assurance plays in the RTFO.
- ** Lead on data and statistical reporting.** You will ensure the data we hold is put to best use to support the running of the scheme. You will be the line manager for the HEO Statistical Officer and support them with the publication of the renewable fuel statistical reports.

**About You**

You will need knowledge of environmental or energy related issues and solutions.

Experience of initiating and managing technical projects is required.

You can confidently assess complex technical information, which may sometimes be incomplete or contradictory, to make decisions or recommendations and be able to communicate it to a wide variety of stakeholders.

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

You will have the option to be either based in Hasting, Leeds or Birmingham attracting the national pay scale, or London attracting the London pay scale.

Some travel between locations is likely to help in supporting team integration. Although the role could be based in any of our offices, there is a business need to work in the Hastings office at least 1 day per month.

There may also be some other travel involved to attend meetings across the UK or the EU, this could occur 4-5 times a year and may include overnight stays.
