Quality Management To be responsible for developing, organising and maintaining the Microbiology Quality Accreditation System to ISO15189 Standards and UKAS Accreditation. Management of Staff To manage all BMSs, Support and Clerical staff (and other staff as appropriate) within Microbiology in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures. To manage the recruitment and selection of staff in conjunction with the Head of Pathology and Divisonal Manager. To facilitate the induction, education, training and professional development of staff.

To ensure the deployment, availability and welfare of staff. To conduct staff appraisal and individual performance reviews. Responsible for staff disciplinary and grievance procedures together with the Divisional Manager and Human Resources. Financial Management To assist the Head of Pathology and Divisional Manager in the management of the laboratory budget and in the maintenance and development of the service within the resources available.

To be the budget holder for Microbiology. To pursue appropriate income generation contracts for the laboratory, in collaboration with the Head of Pathology and Divisional Manager. To produce workload data and financial information as required. To contribute in the preparation and negotiation of service level agreements with Trust partners and to participate in contract monitoring meetings.

To liaise with existing customers to support income generation contracts. Technical Services To maintain professional competence and be aware of relevant developments in microbiology and other biomedical sciences. To be responsible for introducing and maintaining methodologies in accordance with Trust policy. To be responsible for maintaining a high standard of work.

To ensure the provision of an efficient, effective and timely service ensuring maximum productivity within allocated resources. To manage the out of hours technical service of the laboratory. To maintain and develop the internal and external quality assurance programmes and to ensure compliance with relevant accreditation schemes. To develop the service of the laboratory in accordance with the strategy agreed by the head of Pathology and Divisional Manager.

To validate and authorise reports as required. Management of Support Services To be responsible for the acquisition, control and utilisation of stock and consumables. To be responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and use of equipment and to maintain an inventory/asset register. To oversee laboratory maintenance, engineering, and structural services.

To manage the building and associated maintenance contracts, eg: estates, cleaning, etc. Equipment To monitor the acquisition, performance and maintenance of laboratory equipment. To ensure that the asset register and inventory of the laboratory are properly maintained. To determine, in collaboration with the Head of Pathology and Divisional Manager, the requirements for new or replacement equipment.

To ensure the laboratory Information Technology systems are appropriately managed in support of the diagnostic, analytical, epidemiological and administrative needs of the laboratory and Trust. Safety To be the Microbiology Department Safety Officer To ensure, in liaison with the Senior Laboratory Staff, a safe environment by maintaining adequate levels of safety and security with the laboratory according to Trust and Laboratory Policies and Procedures. To participate in the required internal and external safety audits. To liaise with and implement recommendations of the Health & Safety Executive.

Represent the Microbiology Department at the Trusts Health & Safety Committee. Security To oversee the security of the building and equipment. To liaise with and implement recommendations of the Police Special Branch Anti Terrorism Division. To liaise with and implement recommendations of the Trusts Security Department.

Research and Development To participate in and support the R&D activities within the laboratory and Trust To participate in R&D committees and working parties as appropriate. To collaborate and participate in the planning and implementation of developments within the laboratory. Service Development To attend or participate in local or national committees or working groups as appropriate. To collaborate and participate in the planning and implementation of developments within the Trust.

To liaise with existing and new customers to support income generation contracts for the department. Travel To be flexible to travel to Laboratories based at the COCH and Wirral Trust as required
