**The role**

The Financial Times is seeking a data journalist to join its award-winning Visual and Data Journalism team.

The post will be on the editorial statistics desk, focussing mainly (but not exclusively) on the coverage of companies and markets.

The correct use of data and visual material is central to the FT's reporting. The statistics desk collaborates with other FT reporters and columnists in all topic areas, helping to source and analyse data, and produce data visualisations for news, analysis and opinion pieces, often to short deadlines.

The role involves pitching and writing data-driven stories.

**What we are looking for**
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with newsroom colleagues
- Strong numeracy
- Expert-level data cleaning and analysis skills in spreadsheets (eg Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets)
- Awareness of data visualisation theory (eg which chart type to use in which context)
- The ability to explain complex data issues to non-specialists
- Ability to write based on both quantitative analysis and interviewed sources
- Strong ideas and a desire to develop them into original data-led stories
- Some experience of reporting on companies or markets for publication to a generalist audience (though not necessarily in a journalism context)

**Experience with the following competencies and skills would be preferred but are **not** essential**:

- using commercial databases (eg Bloomberg, Refinitiv Eikon or Datastream, S&P Capital IQ, Factset)
- reporting based on company accounts
- visualising data using tools such as Flourish or Datawrapper
- cleaning and analysing large datasets using R, to identify and hone stories
- data visualisation development using D3
- working collaboratively with others on coding projects using version control systems such as Git

**How we work**

Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 3 days a week.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House (District or Circle line), St. Paul's (Central line), Bank (Central or Waterloo & City line) or Barbican (Central, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan lines).
