The Directorate is unique across DWP in that it has end to end ownership of all aspects of Fraud, Error and Debt, from policy and analysis, right the way through to investigation and court proceedings.

**Job description**:
These roles are based within the Operational Intelligence Service (OIS) part of the directorate, and are a critical part at the start of many of our criminal investigations.
There are a variety of roles available for Intelligence Officers to include intelligence gathering, disclosure and specialist document examination.

The purpose of the Operational Intelligence Units (OIU) is to utilise the powers granted under the Social Security Fraud Act (2001) to gather vital Intelligence from sensitive external information providers on behalf of criminal investigators, such as financial institutions, utility companies, educational establishments etc.

As an Intelligence Gathering Officer (IGO) you will be given bespoke training and in work support, with emphasis on intrusive legal powers; to help you make requests that are legal, justified, proportionate and necessary to comply with legal requirements. The vital intelligence you gather will be essential for investigators, who will use it to inform interviews under caution and subsequent prosecutions.

The purpose of the Identity Fraud Team is to prevent, detect and correct a UK citizen’s identity. Document Examiners receive and create intelligence reports for both internal and external investigations.
- Complete a full examination of documents at an advanced specialist level to determine if the document is genuine, counterfeit / forged or invalid. Including Passports, ID cards, Driving Licences, UK Visas / Residence Permits, and Birth/Marriage Certificates.
- Carry out Intelligence Gathering duties in accordance with procedures and guidance (Intelligence is gathered in a legal and professional way using mainly Social Security Fraud Act (SSFA) powers and the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018 sh2 para 2 (1).
- Make effective decisions in accordance with legislation and to justify and effectively communicate decisions made.
- Fully analyse intelligence received to establish the full extent of the fraud being investigated.
- Liaise with Investigations, Information Providers, Law Enforcement Agencies, DWP front line services and other government departments.
- Manage workloads to ensure efficient use of resources.
- Provide a high-quality customer service.
- Work with other organisations on matters of national security.
