Our client, a well-respected charity is looking for a Children & Young Persons Embedded Mentor to join a dedicated and compassionate national team tasked with delivering an Embedded Mentor Programme within educational settings, working specifically with at-risk students already within or at high risk of entering the criminal justice system across South Wales.

You will play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable and at-risk young people overcome challenges, set and achieve academic and personal goals, and make informed positive choices that reduce their risk of offending and entry into the criminal justice system.

Synopsis of duties:

- Provide face to face 1-1 mentoring sessions within an educational setting on a weekly basis to a caseload of approximately 8 targeted at-risk students
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students to provide emotional support, guidance, and mentorship.
- Address individual student needs and challenges, utilising personal experiences, local knowledge, professional skills and programme materials to offer support and intervention.
- Assist students in setting and achieving academic, personal, and career goals.
- Ensuring students are equipped to think critically, assess risk and make better life choices.
- Collaborate with professionals to support and develop strategies to minimise the risk to students.
- Maintain a trauma informed approach, that recognises and responds to trauma and amplifies the voices and experiences of students.
- Develop positive, pro-social attitudes, behaviour and social skills among students.
- Safeguard, protect and promote the welfare of children and young people.
- Ensure a ‘whole school’ approach including delivering awareness raising sessions to parents/ carers and other professionals

Essential Requirements:

- A deep understanding of the complex issues and challenges facing vulnerable young people
- Relevant direct or indirect experience of the criminal justice system, or experience of the issues facing this client group (substance misuse, drug supply, gangs or knife crime, social exclusion and isolation, child criminal exploitation, adverse childhood experiences and trauma)
- Experience in supporting young people involved in or at risk of entry into the Criminal Justice System.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Understanding and demonstration of professional standards, accountability and commitment to excellent safeguarding practice and professional boundaries
- An empathetic and understanding attitude towards young peoples’ needs
- Outstanding organisational skills
- Ability to use monitoring systems to record all aspects of the work, including action plans, outcomes and session data on a day-to-day basis
- A proactively emotionally resilient Mentor that can engage positively and successfully with challenging individuals, including those with complex needs, reluctance to discuss their needs and emotional turmoil
- Enhanced DBS registered on the DBS Update Service would be desirable, however, a new DBS can be processed if appointed
