File Handler Assistant
Supporting Lead and Assistant File Handlers, performing specific delegated tasks, to pursue the progression and/or resolution of a file/ piece of strategic project work as soon as practically possible.
**Key Accountabilities**
- To undertake initial steps on a file including sending out acknowledgements, and procedural documents such as AOS/Notice of Acting.
- Conduct such investigations as are appropriate and as may be delegated from time to time by the Lead and Assistant File Handler(s)
- Liaising with Courts, Counsel, Opponents, Experts, Witnesses, Insureds and brokers to progress the case. Examples of tasks include requesting and providing updates; requests for extensions to comply with directions; dealing with GP, hospital, OH and Personnel mandates; booking Counsel for hearings and conferences; and appointments with experts.
- Progress so as to be able to carry out non-standard procedural tasks, including drafting non-standard court documents.
- Where appropriate, review medical records and take witness statements.
- To assist the Lead and Assistant File Handler(s) in progressing the file in the most appropriate manner.
- Undertake Legal Research: attend client presentations; take training notes; attend court with counsel; watching brief at inquests; attend conferences; undertake supervised negotiation
- Undertake administration duties on files, such tasks may include completion of MI; drafting write off forms, requesting final bills and dealing with billing queries; and file closure/transfer activities
- Complete initial steps in recovery of our Client’s outlay and collate the outcome
Activity Time Frames
- Adaptable; follows the direction of the LFH/AFH and prioritises own activity on a daily basis.
Scale and Scope
- Typically expect 4 chargeable hours per day, to be agreed at team/local level.
- Supports one or more Lead and Assistant File Handler(s)
- Works on the case load of the Lead and Assistant File Handlers
- Complete delegated tasks within time frame agreed with Lead and Assistant File Handlers
Working Hours
35 hours per week
Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm with 1 unpaid hour for lunch.
**Experience, Skills and Qualifications**
- Basic Guidelines for court/CPR inc completion of court forms
- Client SLAs
- Building deeper experience in Disease strategic litigation
- Basic claim and file handling skills.
- Investigation techniques
- Progression to a more detailed understanding of CPR
- Financial Management/recording of fees and chargeable hours
- Through formal input build an understanding of;
- Area of law relevant to the role.
