Accountable to the Divisional Senior Manager (Planning) the Tactical Commander will provide a daily 24/7 tactical command and incident response role and will be responsible for the overall (on scene) tactical command, coordination and performance of the Division.

This role will provide visible leadership, problem solving / decision making and assessment of risk in a live dynamic environment, effectively overseeing the daily Divisional tactical plan. The Tactical Commander will undertake the national major incident doctrine role and associated action cards of the ‘Tactical Commander’ or ‘Operational Commander’, dependent on the type of incident and command structure in place.

The Tactical Commander will ensure that they work closely with colleagues to provide support and post-incident feedback to teams and clinicians following significant clinical events in the both the in and out of hours periods, hand-over to the Station Manager and Divisional Senior Clinical Leader function to provide ongoing support.

The Tactical Commander will act as a reactive leader supporting, supervising and signposting staff groups on an “on shift” basis.The Tactical Commander will provide the 24/7 Divisional/area senior point of contact for system, CCG, hospital issues, turnaround and escalation, working closely with the Regional Operations Manager (ROM). The role will also work closely with other TCs within their area and the Trust, recognising the need for cross area and system working.

The Tactical Commander will provide the 24/7 Divisional/area senior point of contact for system, ICB, hospital issues, turnaround and escalation, working closely with the Regional Operations Manager (ROM). The role will also work closely with other TCs within their area and the Trust, recognising the need for cross area and system working.

Operationally the role will work across 24 hours / 7 days (12 hour rota) with a requirement to work out of hours and weekends to support operational delivery.

Northamptonshire has a team of Tactical commanders with 5 based North of the county and 5 based South of the county.

The Tactical commanders are responsible for the dynamic running of the division on a daily basis. Liaising with both internal and external stakeholders. Monitoring the call cycle to include mobilisation, on scene times along with pre and post hospital times. Dealing with any fleet issues and working closely with our resourcing department.

The Tactical Commanders are called upon to manage any large incident and also become the Cardiac Arrest Leads in the event of this type of call.

There is a close working relationship between the Divisional Senior Clinical Leads and the Station Managers within Northamptonshire Division.

To be the visible tactical leader and provide expert (operational and tactical
commander level) knowledge to Division on a duty basis.
In line with the Trust Command and Control policy, operate as senior member of the organisation at scene, or in remote tactical command, in charge of all their resources within an agreed sphere of command.
To provide leadership, support and advice to operational staff to ensure optimal incident command support across the area and division.
Promote the vision, values and strategic aims of the Trust and Division.
Where required, provide leadership and coordination of critical clinical incidents (i.e. cardiac arrests acting as a Cardiac Arrest Leader), providing any initial post incident de-brief to staff.
