**Job Purpose**
This post is based within the Neurobiology research area of the School of Infection and Immunity working under the supervision of Professor Julia Edgar (Principal Investigator).
The post holder will contribute to a research project investigating glial cell function in the context of multiple sclerosis. Specifically, the job requires expert knowledge in neuroscience and/or immunology and/or molecular biology.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI):

1. Assist and contribute to predetermined, prescribed or individual / joint research objectives, under supervision of the PI and in accordance with the project deliverables and School research strategy.
2. Undertake analyses of central nervous system cells and tissue or undertake literature reviews (as appropriate to the role).
3. Design, set up and perform experiments, maintain experimental resources, analyse and interpret results and contribute to the development of experimental strategies.
4. Contribute to the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
5. Develop and enhance your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow, School of Infection and Immunity, including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile / quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit and gathering indicators of esteem.
6. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
7. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
8. Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
9. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team / group meetings / seminars / workshops across the research School and wider community (e.g. academic and industrial partners).
10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School including budget and expenditure monitoring, and stock control.
11. Contribute to outreach and recruitment activities of the University of Glasgow.
12. Carry out modest teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating etc) and associated administration as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with PI.
13. Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of laboratory and/or experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.
14. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
15. Engage in personal, professional and career development to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
16. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and / or PI.
17. Contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan - World Changers Together 2025
These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may reasonably be expected to perform.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**:
A2. Knowledge of molecular and cell biology, ideally in parasitology.
A3. Knowledge in cell culture and genetic manipulation
A4. Knowledge in next generation sequence work

**For appointment at grade 7**

**Essential**:

A5. SCQF level 12 (PhD) qualification, or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience in Neuroscience, Neuroimmunology, Immunology or Molecular Biology.
A6. Extensive and up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge in areas related to the field of research.

**Desirable**:

B1. Knowledge of neural cell culture including human iPSCs, electron microscopy and/or biochemical methods and analyses.
B2. Understanding of transgenic mouse models, uses and limitations.
B3. Experience in breeding mutant and/or transgenic mice and colony maintenance

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1. Knowledge of molecular and cell biology.
C2. Ability to, or knowledge in, generating and analysing cell mutants using molecular biology approaches.
C3. Research creativity and strong cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.
C4. Highly motivated, ability to use initiative and quick to learn new techniques.
C5. Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely
C6. Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.
