- Job description- The deliberate mis-description of waste is a criminal activity and has been highlighted as a serious issue across the country. It diverts waste away from legitimate waste management and has great potential to damage and pollute the environment.
As an Environmental Crime Officer with a focus on waste mis-description you will investigate and audit sites to identify cases where this is taking place. Using your skills and experience you will follow an intelligence-led approach to identify suspect sites and evidence offending, instigating remedial and enforcement action where appropriate.
As waste management is an increasingly complex industry you will be expected to develop strong working partnerships with regulatory and support teams in the Environment Agency to get the best outcomes. You will also liaise regularly with external enforcement partners

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The team is responsible for investigating serious environmental crime across East Anglia. Our focus is mainly on waste crime but also on other serious crime linked to environmental permit breaches or pollution of water, land, and air.
You will join a dedicated and experienced team of investigators and support staff who work closely with our internal regulatory teams and partner agencies such as the police, HMRC and local authorities.
- Experience/skills required- Essential:

- You will have experience of intelligence-led regulation and/or enforcement, ideally relating to waste management and a working knowledge of the legislation surrounding investigatory practice. - You’ll be comfortable auditing. Where appropriate, reviewing technical information and analytical data to identify if offences have occurred.
- Equally, you should have the necessary people skills to deal with suspects and work closely with partners.
- You’ll be involved in direct enforcement, so leading or assisting wider investigations into waste crime involving the mis-description of waste in East Anglia.
- A full driving licence is a requirement as regular travel across East Anglia is needed.
