The post holder will work as an integral part of the Neonatal Intensive Care team, working with the nurse in charge of the shift. You will be responsible for the co-ordination of all patient facilities services in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and ensuring a clean, safe and comfortable environment.

The main elements of the role are ensuring the delivery of cleaning, stocking equipment, ordering stores, catering, together with other specified tasks to meet individual patient needs as determined by the sister/charge nurse.

The post holder will be required to work closely with contractors and support service departments. He/she will monitor quality standards, report deficiencies and appropriate action taken to the nurse in charge.

General

To identify any problems with general cleanliness and report to the nurse in charge.

To ensure general and specialist equipment, specific to area of work, are cleaned, stocked, logged and in good working order as per cleaning policy.

To ensure the department is safe and tidy at all times e.g. remove clutter, tidy notice boards, signage etc.

To maintain upkeep of patients’ bed spaces.

To transport equipment, consumables and written information as required.

To maintain and update paper-based records and information as required.

To receive and pass on information to others, maintaining confidentiality.

To refer complaints to the nurse in charge.

To assist with training of staff involved with department housekeeping services to achieve required standards.

To maintain personal trust and local mandatory training compliance.

In conjunction with the nurse in charge and multi-disciplinary team observe the monitoring of service delivery especially related to cleaning, food, linen and the environment at the agreed frequency.

Nutrition and Food Preparation

To observe and record fridge temperature and food storage as per policy, taking action if necessary.

To take responsibility for stock rotation and discarding out-of-date food and milk.

To maintain parent kitchen in conjunction with medirest.

Maintaining the environment

To ensure all defects are logged, reported, recorded, monitored and closed down as appropriate.

To carry out regular equipment monitoring in accordance with procedures.

To clean beds / mattresses after occupancy and make beds as required.

To undertake the monthly mattress audit.

To ensure the patient’s space is respected.

To maintain the safety of people’s property and belongings.

To ensure equipment to be returned for reprocessing is stored safely.

Ordering of stock for all areas of the department.

Liaise with materials management team.

Ensure all department daily checks are completed and signed for.

Working practices and relationships

To respect the privacy and dignity of patients whilst carrying out housekeeping duties.

To respond to emergencies as appropriate and according to Trust policy. To maintain effective working relationships.

To foster people’s equality, diversity and rights.

To provide an effective customer service

Support of people

To ensure the ward has sufficient stocks to meet patient and staff needs.

To assist people with accessing written information e.g. cards and letters.To explain the correct use of equipment to people.
