Lecturer in Modern Chinese History

**This is a fixed term, full time appointment until 31 August 2026.**

You will have completed a PhD or equivalent qualification in modern Chinese history and possess a publication record that shows clear evidence of research excellence and outstanding potential to contribute to the Department’s commitment to research-led teaching. You should have strong and relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.

You will teach across a range of topics in Chinese and East Asian History between the late 19th and early 21st centuries, and also contribute to modules exploring other themes, regions and approaches to history as appropriate, including on the the jointly-taught BA introductory module ‘The Modern World’ and the core BA and MA skills, approaches and historiography modules.

You will supervise BA and MA dissertation students. In addition to teaching, the appointee will undertake academic administration, including convening one of our MA programmes, most likely the MA Global History. They will engage in scholarly research and publication, and participate in the intellectual life of the department.

**Ideally, you will have**:

- A PhD or equivalent and a breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in modern Chinese history
- Experience of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including the supervision of dissertations
- The skills to convene a masters programme (such as the MA in Global History), including the academic and pastoral support of students and a commitment to working with diversity
- Outstanding potential to contribute to the department’s vibrant research culture and research-led teaching

**Remuneration**:
Lecturer Grade of the College's London Pay Scale which is £41,348 rising to £56,881 per annum

The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
