**Job Title**: Head of Year 12/13 (rotation)

**Job Purpose**:Responsibility for the welfare, academic progress and conduct of the Year 12/13 students

At Surbiton High School we are fully committed to our students’ academic, personal and social development. As such, the responsibilities of this role cover a wide range of activities and involve working with the Senior Leadership Team, Heads of Department, the Admissions Department, Careers Department, School Nurse, Head of Year 11 and the Local Community. Each Head of Year also has specific additional roles across the whole Sixth Form.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- To be responsible for the pastoral welfare of the students in their year group alongside the Form Tutors and in liaison with the Assistant Principal (Director of Sixth Form), Senior Vice Principal and the Principal
- To communicate with parents as necessary and deal with parental correspondence
- To coordinate the work of the Form Tutor and facilitate regular meetings
- To communicate concerns/achievement regarding individuals to Form Tutors and, where appropriate, with the Senior Leadership Team
- To have oversight of the 1:1 coaching conversations in the Year Group
- To undertake Learning Walks of the Tutor team and monitoring of tutor time and 1:1 conversations
- To have oversight of the content and delivery of PSHE and RSE, including SCOPE days, working with the Director of Sixth Form and Head of PSHE
- To contribute to the Sixth Form assembly programme
- To attend Pupil Development Team meetings and contribute to the development of well-being initiatives
- To have oversight of Parental Consultation Evenings for the Year Group
- To support new Form Tutors in their tasks and offer appropriate induction to their roles and functions
- To have oversight of the reporting process for the Year Group in liaison with the Senior Leadership Team
- To attend bi-weekly Sixth Form Team and Update meetings with the Principal
- To liaise with the appropriate members of the Senior Leadership Team, the Sixth Form Team and Heads of Department to ensure rigorous and appropriate intervention is in place to ensure to students are able to meet their potential
- To lead on the Surbiton Independent Research Project (this is an in-house alternative to the EPQ)
- To help develop links with universities and university departments i.e. by undertaking regular visits to universities
- To contribute to the Year 11 A-level options process
- To work with the Sixth Form Team to organise the Year 12 induction day, university visits and activities week
- To participate in the assessment of potential new students into the Sixth Form
- To support the School House system
- To be an active supporter of students in the Sixth Form, attending co-curricular events and performances as appropriate
- To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably requested

**Person Specification**

**Qualifications**
- Good Honours degree
- A postgraduate teaching qualification (QTS desirable but not essential)
- Evidence of further relevant professional development would be an advantage
- Willing to train to a minimum of Level 2 safeguarding and undertake further pastoral training

**Skills**
- The ability to inspire, motivate and support students and colleagues
- An ability to form strong, professional relationships with students, parents and colleagues
- The knowledge and tact required to deal with parental and student academic and pastoral concerns
- Have the vision for and the ability to translate the Surbiton High School strategy into reality
- Excellent organisational, administrative, data management and ICT skills
- Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
- An excellent classroom practitioner

**Experience**
- Involvement in pastoral care within a school setting
- Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels and a proven track record of delivering on academic performance
- Experience of leading and collaborating with colleagues

**Knowledge**
- Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
- An awareness of and understanding of the rewards and challenges faced by students in the sixth form

- High levels of personal and professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality
- Personal warmth to build positive rapport and gain the confidence of students, staff and parents
