Is diagnosing and problem solving ‘Your Thing’?

We are looking for an excellent problem solver to work within our maintenance team, to fault find and repair our trains to ensure our customers get the best possible service, through an excellently maintained, reliable fleet.

At Northern, we play a vital role connecting millions of people to work, leisure and education opportunities.

We operate 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England. But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers’ lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.

So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

**About the role**:
As an A Grade within our Blackpool TrainCare Centre, you’ll be responsible for carrying out vital maintenance and repairing of our trains. This includes servicing, fault finding, repair and overhaul of all traction and rolling stock, components and equipment to the approved standards, as laid down in the vehicle maintenance instructions, technical specifications and related working procedures.

You will report to our Team Leaders and work alongside our maintenance team to keep our trains in service and fault find when things go wrong.

It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Blackpool TrainCare Centre.

- Keeping up to date on routine services for our trains, to ensure we are running a safe service
- Signing off to confirm that all your work has been completed correctly and accurately
- Prioritise your daily workload to ensure smooth and efficient running of our services
- Attend track calls, where necessary

**About you**:
We expect you to be qualified with a level 3 NVQ or a recognised apprenticeship and have the experience and practical ability of electrical and mechanical systems and techniques. We would also like to see a demonstration of your ability to successfully complete further competency training, as required. We’re also looking for the following:

- The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when things can change as well as managing your day to day workload
- Showing initiative where necessary, whilst continuing to adhere to our working policies
- Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
- Experience in diagnosing and solving problems
- Ability to interpret technical diagrams
- Ability to work to instructions, safety policies and rules and regulations

And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing.

**Our Benefits**:
Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:

- Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
- Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
