**About Blackburn Youth Zone**

Blackburn Youth Zone is a 21st century youth hub located at the heart of Blackburn, open to young people aged 5 to 25 years old, aiming to change the prospects offered to young people in the area. Our vision is to be at the heart of the community, collaborating to create a more cohesive and prosperous Blackburn and Darwen.

Blackburn Youth Zone is built on land where, 100 years ago, Blackburn’s first electricity generating station once stood. On the place where electricity first came to and powered the town, the Youth Zone is now powering the community through the energy and creativity of young people. What also makes us distinctive is our relationship with thelocal business community, who have wholeheartedly embraced the concept and pledged to work together to raise the aspirations of our town’s young people, equipping them with life skills, increased confidence and independence which in turn will regenerate our town from the bottom up.

We are one of the leading youth organisations in Blackburn, with a membership of over 2,500 young people. We are open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year and offer over 40 different activities and opportunities in our open access youth club.

**Main Purpose**:
To work across Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone, approaching and engaging directly with groups of young people on their own turf and within their communities. To build relationships and to help young people to stay safe whilst reducing anti-social behaviour. To support local youth projects, planning and delivering activities for Junior and Senior sessions. To staff transport to and from Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone, enabling young people to access the facilities. All of these elements can involve working in a challenging environment, remaining calm under pressure, dealing with challenging behaviour whilst maintaining overall discipline with good humour and continuing to engage with the young people.

**Main Responsibilities**:

- Work within the performance framework of Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone and OnSide;
- Represent Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone positively and effectively in all dealings with internal colleagues, and external partners;
- To be alert to issues of safeguarding and child protection, ensuring the welfare and safety of Youth Zone members is promoted and safeguarded, and to report any child protection concerns to the designated Child Protection Officers using the safeguarding policies, procedures and practice (training to be provided);
- To assist with any promotional activities and visits that take place at the Youth Zone;
- To actively promote the Youth Zone and positively contribute towards increasing Youth Zone membership;
- To adhere to Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone policies at all times, with particular reference to Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities.

**Person Specification: Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they can meet the following**:
Face to face activity delivery, working with children and young people (aged 8 plus) both in groups and individually

Experience of working with challenging young people

Experience of supporting young people who are disaffected, underachieving and / or have social / emotional barriers to participation

Experience of working in a team and alongside volunteers

Organising a programme of youth work activities

Residential work with young people

**Education/Training/Qualification**

Introduction to Youth Work or Youth and Community Work NVQ / VRQ

Level 1 or Level 1 Playwork

**Skills**

Strong commitment to children and young people and an ability to engage and build positive relationships with all young people, including disengaged and disadvantaged young people

Ability to develop good professional relationships with children, young people and adults

Ability to work with young people to develop their social education by providing programmes of activities, services and facilities that are fun and enable young people
