Out of Hours Practitioner

The post holder will be part of a team working autonomously to provide a service out of hours to Division 2, supporting Medical staff and Nurses in the provision of care to patients. The post holder will also provide clinical, professional and managerial advice to members of staff within the clinical area and also to other clinical services within the Trust.

The post holder will be expected to act up into the band 7 role in the absence of the band 7, to work to agreed protocols and guidelines supporting specialist practice. The post holder should be skilled with the competencies of: Venepuncture, cannulation, verification of expected death, arterial blood gas sampling, first line patient assessment. Male catheterisation. They should also possess the ALS or ILS as they will be part of the Trust cardiac arrest response team. Willingness to undergo the Health Assessment course and Non Medical Prescribing if not completed already.

**To perform agreed competencies including**: venepuncture, cannulation, verification of expected death, arterial blood gas sampling, first line patient assessment.

To be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to in patients within Division 2 and in conjunction with ward staff.

Work in collaboration with all members of the MDT out of hours by prioritising workload, responding to emergencies.

To offer clinical, professional and managerial advise to staff working in all areas.

To supervise junior members of staff and students.

To provide support and advice as requested by the staff within the Division in the absence of their own manager ensuring their own manager is informed where appropriate.

To be responsible for the effective communication between the MDT, patients and relatives.

To maintain accurate documentation.

To be actively involved in teaching and assessing of staff.

Support staff in the clinical areas as required.

Comply with Trust policies and procedures.

Undertake and participate in nursing research and clinical audits appropriate to the speciality.

Attend courses/lectures, in-service training as indicated by the need of the service and within the limitations of the service as required by the post.

Promote a professional and courteous culture within the ward environment

Lead and promote a positive approach to health education within the clinical area.

Conduct risk assessments as necessary and take appropriate action where required.

Be actively involved in the development of the out of hours service.
